I have a 91 GLI with a 2.0L 16V engine. The idle surges anywhere from 1000-1100 rpm's AFTER it's warmed up. I've already checked vacuum leaks, and got nothing, so I don't know where to turn from here. How do I the idle back to just a consistent level!?!?!

This was a perfect reference for me. When connecting/disconnecting the jumper wire keep in mind that the check engine light will blink to show the codes after the disconnect. (I used an LED as the jumper and thought it was the LED that was supposed to blink while connected)

Also, if you don't have one, get a Bentley. People on here say it's worth it, and they speak the truth. It's payed for itself 100x over for me already and I've only had the car (and book) for 3 weeks. It tells you every engine idle symptom and the fix for it on one page.

It might be your oxygen sensor. Disconnect it temporarily to see if the surging stops, then turn engine off and reconnect it.

I got away with doing this 2-3 times over a month until the car was sold.
