So today, I finally dove into the front suspension. I bought a set of ST coil overs last year and needed to get them on. Passenger side was easy. Driver side gave me some difficulty. Couldn't get the axle to come out of the hub. Then it seemed to separate from the inside (trans) and gave me enough slack to get the knuckle off the lower control arm and drop it Down enough to pull it off the strut. Great.

Upon reassembly, everything seemed to go back together just fine. Took it out for a drive an I felt a horrible clunk clunk clunk. Wtf? I re-checked all my bolts and everything looked good.

Still there. I basically disassembled everything and redid it all just to make sure things were seated. Yep.

Still there... Clunk clunk clunk. Wtf?

Re-installed the original suspension thinking maybe my st stuff was the culprit. Nope still there. Wtf?

It felt like a wheel was not bolted down. Hmmmm... Can't tell where it's coming from.

So I jack up the front end, pull the wheels, and run it in gear. This is what I found!

This is the driver-side axle. I tried pulling it out and seeing if there was something off, but everything "feels" fine. You can clearly see the wobble.

What gives? Anyone encounter this? Do I have a busted cv joint?

wtf... I've never seen this happen. Ever. I'm surprised that it's even turning.

The weird thing is that everything feels like it fits together fine with no slop or looseness. I posted on TDIClub too and someone said there's a clip that holds things together. I'm thinking the clip or retainer must have come apart allowing the innards to fall apart.

Still debating on to service it or replace it. The car is under warranty (only have 26k), but not sure how this would go over. Would have to get it towed to prevent any further damage.

You would also need to button everything back up and stock suspension. They will not cover that under warranty with aftermarket suspension on.

Already did that. Have a little bit of buttoning up to do before the tow truck takes it.

    Just a quick update...

Got it all back to stock and had it towed to the dealer where it was covered under warranty!

Got it back late Friday before the weekend and then got the coilovers swapped in without any issues. It's amazing how much faster it went the third time!

Anyway, car looks awesome now! Might need to lower the front a tiny bit more. I also need to fix the alignment as it seems off a bit now. I do my own alignments on my 928, so I just need to adapt it for the JSW. Shouldn't be too hard (I hope).
