1998 Jetta VR6- cranks no start

Hello,
I need help with my car, it cranks over but will not start. Tried starter fluid, but nothing, just cranks. My car has been sitting for about 6 months, it ran good before that. I purchased the latest software(Full version) from Ross-Tech, and ran "Auto-Scan"

Only these codes came out:
P1544 Angle sensor 1 for throttle actuator, Signal too large
P0121 Throttle position sensor, Implausible signal

Also, went into the "Engine" module and found these values:
Thottle Pot Voltage 1 - 5.100 V
Thottle Pot Voltage 2 - 5.100 V
Operating Mode - Part Throttle
Basic Settings Status - ERROR

Not really sure what to do next, any help would be greatly appreciated.

i just posted a thread too.

if my car sits for more than a day it will not start. i have to keep cranking it 10 or more times until it finally starts. then if i shut it off , itll start first shot.

i read online it could be leaky injectors that floor the motor but mine are all brand new.

When I turn on the ignition key(without trying to start), no noise at all. Thanks for the reply!

Unhook the battery (both terminals) find the engine computer back behind the firewall and disconnect the harness. check for corrosion on the pins of the computer and on plug harness.

I had issues similar to you and this was the problem. My car started right up. This is a good thing to check that costs no money. Just be careful and observant while doing this.

Exactly, my car did exactly what is described a while back and I checked the coil pack it just wasn't being to what to do in Lamest terms and there for diddnt know that it was even cranking... Replace the crank sensor Ill put money on that fixes it

Sorry for taking so long to respond. Heres what I have found so far:

no spark(when cranking)
ohmed out the crank sensor and I got 950 ohms at 2 contacts.
no fuel to fuel rail when trying to start.(took both hoses off, and no fuel comes out.)

Update:

I was verifying all my engine electrical connections, and found that the big round connector at the LH side of the valve cover was loose. Took it apart and used electrical cleaner, and compressed air, and reinstalled.

Now the throttle body buzzes and my scan software can do a calibration, and it is OK with "Autoscan"= no errors, and no codes. Also, now I'm geetting fuel to the fuel rail. But, I still can't get a spark. Any thoughts.

Does the rpm gauge attempt to move at all while cranking the motor over, if not replace the crank sensor wire.. If the crank sensor wire is bad you will lose spark and fuel..

i would say don't replace anything yet. since you have ross-tech, go into the engine (01) then measuring blocks (08) and in the top group number put in 098 and hit go. it'll adapt your tb. let it do it and don't touch anything especially the gas pedal for 30 seconds at least.

Yeah, I did that and the results were ADP-OK, and I here it buzz and see movement. I think I will replace my crank sensor, since my tach needle does'nt move when I crank the engine. Thanks again for all the help everyone.

Did you check for power at the coil pack? Crank sensor sounds like its good since your getting fuel to the rail.

Injector pulse width. Fuels gonna be present.

OK, I installed a new crank sensor, and still no spark, and no movement of the tachometer. Also, I did check the coil pack's power connector(with ignition key on, but not cranking), and the black wire was 13.2v, the remaining connectors were 0.3 to 0.5v. Any suggestions?

There a few things that will stop the car from sparking crank sensor, coil pack, wiring which i doubt if the harness hasnt been messed with, ign switch, and the ecu. Check for injector pluse just to see if the ecu is sending signal to the sensors.

When trying to check for injector pulse, how do you access the fuel injectors electrical connectors? Their all covered by the intake manifold. Maybe I'm not checking the correct area for the test light? Thanks!

If you look on the passenger side of the mani you can wiggle it out.

Could the car be in a anti theft mode? Something free to try is take battery out hold pos and neg terminals together for 30 seconds and then reinstall battery. unlock car with key on door then try and start it

I tested my fuel injectors with my Ross-Tech software, I used "Output Test", and I could here the injectors all buzz. With my ignition on, I checked for voltage at fuse #18(fuel pump) and nothing. Could this mean my fuel pump relay is bad?

Also, does my car use an ECU Relay #109, my fuse/relay panel location #3 is empty? Is this where my ECU Relay should be? Still no start, and no spark. Thanks!

Your car is obd2 so you wont have an ecu relay. either you coil pack is shot or the ign switch is no good.

you already replaced crank sensor next in line is the coil pack then if that dont fix it id replace the ignition switch if it is the coil pack you should do the gm conversion its much cheaper

Interested in this as I have same issue. Mine ran beautiful as usual. Parked in garage. Two days later, cranks and no start. Checked ECU for corrosion, nothing. No fuel to motor. Tach doesn't move. Gonna try crank sensor. Then ignition. So if you get this figured out, post up.

I was checking the fuel pump relay(3 months old) and had Autozone check it, and it was bad. They ordered me one, and I will try it after work today. Hope this it! Will post after I install new fuel pump relay!

Well, I installed the new fuel pump relay, and still no start, or spark. Used Auto-Scan and no codes. So, I looked at my Bentley repair manual to see the procedure for checking the coil pack power supply connector. It passed every test but one. That was where you measure Pin #5 and #2, and then #5 & #3, and #5 & #4, for a pulse voltage when cranking, and nothing! The manual said to replace the ECU. So this Thursday I should have an ECU(E-bay). Thanks again for all the help.
