Hey guys i had a question. So i am within a couple weeks of leaving my internship in ohio to go back to kansas for school, and i need to get my audi back. Can i tow my 87 4000 cs quattro with a toe dolly? If so, do i need to put the 4wd switch on the panel to a specific spot? I just dont want to mess the 4 wheel drive system up. If any of you could give me suggestions, i would greatly appreciate it. Thanks alot

The best way is with a full trailer. Barring that, you really have to lift the front or rear wheels off the ground but they have to be able to freewheel (not on a dolly) OR remove the driveshaft. Also, you're really not supposed to tow it more than 50 miles if any wheels are touching the ground. The reason is because of the way the gears lubricate themselves, which is not very well unless there's power going through the transmission. So you risk burning up the gears.

Probably the only safe way to flat tow it would be to remove the axles, which would be a pain in the butt, especially because you'd have to reinstall the outer CV joints to keep the hub assembly together. But if all else fails that's a possibility.

Also, contrary to popular belief, removing the drive shaft will do nothing to prevent damage in a flat tow, as it's the wheels turning the gears that's the problem, not the front and rear being connected.

So a few options for you, none very practical I'm afraid.
