Thread: Passat TDI -- 5SPD----RHD!--------------RARE!!!

  1. 07-31-2012 10:35 AM #1
Soooo, I (and now you) have a rare opportunity to get a right hand drive, 1.9L TDI.
Black on black with a manual transmission. 98k miles.

It was brought here legally. He says I will have no problem registering it, but I might have a problem selling it one day.
As my history with cars goes, I can't seem to hold on to anything very long....so this poses a problem for me.

Problem is it costs 11k and I can't see dumping that money on something I wont' be able to resell.

SO, the deal is this, I make it so YOU are the new owner...for a finders fee.

Any takers?? Any other ideas on what to do with it?

For fastest response Please contact me direct at lunchindabox@yahoo.com I don't come here that often.

  3. 08-01-2012 12:48 PM #3
I am working on it. Trying to get the VIN.
I had a tentative appoitnment to see/drive it last night, but something came up. Trying for again tonight.

I see the Diplomatic plates, that would explain how it got here.

I assume you are in the DC area?

What Embassy was the car attached to?

  5. 08-05-2012 07:25 PM #6
    how much ?

  6. 08-05-2012 10:54 PM #7
Dude is here from the UK.
Yes, we are right outside of DC.
He is asking 11k and promises that you can register it to yourself. He asked the lady at the state department (who has the title) and that is what she told him. She also added that who ever buys it and registers it will have an issue when they try to sell it.
(I am just going by what he told me and he seems like a trustworthy dude and seems sure of the info he is providing)

    Oh, I love these threads.
It amazes me that whenever a thread regarding a grey market vehicle pops up, the naysayers band together.

A couple of questions need to be asked before determining whether this vehicle is a grey market vehicle, or not.

    1) Was the vehicle legally imported?
1a) Was a bond needed/used inorder for importation?
1b) If no bond, the vehicle can be sold for parts.

    2) Is the vehicle a grey market vehicle per NHTSA?
2a) Is there a simular vehicle sold in the USA?
3a) If yes, the vehicle can be POSSIBLY converted to comply with NHTSA.

    3) Are there any debts associated with this vehicle?
3a) Such as: Bonding, importation, financing, mechanic liens, parking citations, registration.
3b) If there are no debts associated with said vehicle, the deed/title to the vehicle is considered free and clear, and this vehicle can be acquired and used as parts, or for future export out of the country.

If the new owner acquires said vehicle with the sole Intent to export, than later has a sudden change of heart, and wishes to keep it.
All he would have to do is get the bill of sale that he received as proof of ownership, then file for a bonded title that equals to the value of said vehicle, check with home state and neighboring states the easiest way to get it registered, once registered, the vehicle was legally imported, might not have the proper docts per NHTSA/DOT, but if the vehicle passes emissions, was legally imported, and currently registered; I would love to accept that case on contingency, based on the simple fact that the registered owner never signed/agreed to the conditions associated with the temporary importation of said vehicle.

What is a grey market vehicle?
Why does the government have anything to do with what type of vehicle I choose to drive?
Who voted, or made up all these rules regarding importation?

The answer is that these rules regarding importation are not laws, these rules are unconstitutional.
A bright thinker can argue that the rules that govern importation are overbroad, biased, and unconstitutional.

We as a people are slowly losing our rights and liberties due to government encroachment.

Nice, its a PD motor though, these vehicles have severe cam wear issues, this one has registration issues, its a still a püššåt, and the steering wheel is on the wrong side.

This topic has come up before, I think you need to do some more research before making people believe that it is register-able in the US.

It needs to be "legalized" just like it was freshly imported from what I understand.

    Good luck though.

Thank you for that. That's funny!

Making people believe... ok.... I take you are referring to the legality of said vehicle.

If that is the case, the terms illegal, "against the law", or "in violation of said law", refer to acts by omission or commission that violate the law of the land. US laws are based on the US Constitution.

US Codes, mandates, and/or regulations are not always Constitutional. Rules/regulations are passed by lawmakers in our government(s) (Municipal/State/Federal) via indirect petition by lobbyists and/or sometimes its constituents. Rules such as import regulations are considered part of the law until that particular rule/regulation is challenged, in Court, due to its unconstitutionality.

We are led to believe that the current import regulations are needed to protect the interests of US based manufacturers, not so, the current import regulations were drafted ONLY to protect the interests of Mercedes Benz, and the other European manufacturers. Current import regulations protect the vehicle manufacturers, and not the constituents, taxpayers, or citizens of the State. The current US vehicle importation regulations are overbroad, biased, and are unconstitutional. Our lawmakers are ONLY looking out for their best interests, and not ours.

cool righ hand drive looks and all; but on a serious note; i am a b3 lover and parts for those are getting harder when it comes to body panels in straight condition and rust wise.

how hard would it be or should i say; how much is it worth it ; this car in case of an accident where there is airbag deployments or damaged to he RHD market only parts? like interior; some under body pieces; etc?
you would have to buy another front end clip to just get your hands on a dash; or a steering column or some other messed up part like.

I just went through all of this last month wanting to import a car from Canada. According to US Customs, the current owner needs to provide proof that it can be legalized here in the States, along with a bill of sale to the potential buyer. If the car passes inspection, Customs will give you paperwork that you take to the DMV along with said bill of sale to have the car registered. If you do not have that paperwork from Customs (called a CBP form if memory serves), the DMV can't register the car, and you're now left with two tons of useless car material. If the car is already here and driving around (which from the look of it, it is), the current owner should already have this taken care of. As far as reselling it goes, that applies to people bringing cars in for resale. Once the car has legal US documentation, you can do whatever you want with it because it's now a legal US car.

and yet, because it's a Diplomat car, none of the above applies. And importation from Canada vs. importation from Europe is very different. Most Canadian cars will pass the US regulations, and all you need is a letter from the manufacturer stating so. Good luck getting that letter from VW for a right-hand drive car with an engine that was never certified in the US..

And as far as constitutionality of our laws - that's nice and all, but I won't spend the time and money going to the Supreme Court to fight it, because they have bigger fish to fry (and I don't have the money)

Why would you charge a finders fee? I'm into VW's for the community and the people. I have given parts away to people that I know need them and want to keep rare cars around. I'm completely broke and would not charge someone a fee for finding a car as long as I knew they were genuine people and would take care of it. I guess that's what separates the genuine people from people like you.
So what if I like to pretend the Joker is behind me and drop down a gear just to smoke people out

you will never register that with a vin with "ZZZ" in it. even if you (somehow) do register it, it will always be one letter away from being seized and crushed my the EPA.

don't believe me? ask the owners of all those "legal" motorex skylines.

That's cool man, I'm into cars for the money...not the love. I was buying VW's mainly for export to Easter Europe, Toyota's for South America and Africa and now Lexus's for Dubai.
That being said, I have given away whole running/inspection ready cars to people in need, but this is not a car for someone "in need" it is rare, hard to find, and only a enthusiast with money should have it.
