Thread: 1996 jetta 01m 2nd gear?

  1. 07-31-2012 04:06 PM #1
Ok here's the deal lost 2nd gear the other day ohm out wiring harness all the way to shift solenoids all tested out good. Tryed diff trans computer still nothing ohmed out all shift solenoids all read about 63.5 ohms. Tryed it again ,no go the other day just driving like normal just plane out lost 2nd gear like the transmission just shifted to neutral..... 2nd mechanically still works if I hold it in first then drop it into 3rd car shifts fine into 3rd and 4th .if i have the car in 3rd gear and then drop it into 2nd gear second works fine and holds? Im kinda wondering if the valve body is by-passing 2nd gear solenoid here or some thing? But what i have read here that solenoid n89 is energized for 2nd and 4th gear??? And 4th works fine any ideas here would be help full.. also havent found anything that looks like an issue with valve body?? Thanx for any info here kinda outa ideas unless 2 solenoids are activated for a normal 2nd gear

Well from what i can gather its pointing towards a solenoid issue .... found out from a few phone calls that the transmission was rebuilt at 90,000 ago its now up to 130,000 miles. I could see that some one was in there replaced wiring harness, valve body push rods and junk. Maybe thay never replaced the oem solenoids and now one has craped out worth i shot i guess.

1st step in diagnosing a computer controlled transmission is scanning the trans computer for trouble codes.

I would assume what your describing is failsafe due to a trouble code, but maybe not because your describing it very strangly. But most people do describe it strangly because they dont understand what is going on.

I would suggest scanning the TCM for trouble codes with vag-com. Then clear the codes and see how it works, and how long it takes for codes to reoccur and what codes reoccur.

Another step that would be helpful is to watch gear command on vag-com. This will show you what the trans computer is commanding. Then you can make a comparison to what the trans is actually doing and that makes it alot easier to communicate to us what your problem is.

ie.... the comuter commands 2nd gear but it stays in 1st. It will shift to 3rd when the computer commands 3rd.

ie the computer never commands 2nd.

    ect..

Thanx for you're reply i appreciate it i will get the trouble codes tomorrow when the new parts come in and i can put the valve body back in it
i do not think its gone into a fail safe mode because its fine in first when it tries to go into second the motor just free revs (no clunk no slip as if its in neutral) 3rd works and 4th as fine. So i thought maybe 2nd gear sprag or something if it even has one in this transmission. But i can make 2nd gear work if i am driving the car in 3rd and drop the gear shifter into 2nd (at a like 45-50 mph) my rpms will jump up and 2nd gear works fine (kind of stimulating a kick down)
I know its hard to diagnose online like this but greatly appreciate yeah taking a look ill post my findings tomorrow And codes that were kicked

Well put 5 new solenoids(1,2,3,5 & 7) in today the car went into limp mode went up town got all the codes cleared(lots from me playing around with every thing) work fine shifted good in all gears for about 5 miles then 2nd gear did the same thing just like some one popped it into neutral. So drove it back got it re scanned, only code that popped up was the transmission temperature sensor which some one had cut the wire before i owned the car. I dont get it why dose every thing else work but 2nd in drive, i still can make 2nd gear work if im driving the car in 3rd and drop the gear shifter into 1st??? Pump pressure maybe? Or possible bad wire that doesn't cause a code to be kicked this really has me scratching my head

Watch gear command with vag-com. See what the computer is commanding.

The same solenoid that makes 2nd also makes 4th. The same clutches that apply 2nd also apply 4th.

YOu need to describe this problem as "the computer commands xyz and ABC happens". Otherwise it makes no sense.

IT cannot have 4th and not have 2nd.

EDIT: Also its either in failsafe or its not. Once the code triggers it will stay in failsafe. I'm not sure if the Temp code will put it in failsafe but if your in failsafe and that is the only code you have then you might need to start there.

Failsafe is high gear starts but will "drop down a gear" if you move the shifter to the Manual 1st position.
