Beetle Conv still dying

[STxFarmer]

Car will run fine and then just die. Wait a few minutes and it will start back up and run again without issues. Never know when it will die or when it will start either. Tried starting it earlier in the driveway and it would just crank. A few minutes later started without any issue.

Have replaced the battery, crankshaft sensor and ignition switch and still having issues. Here is the latest Vag-Comm. I cleared all the codes but still have 2 ABS codes that will not clear. Did the Select Control Module and cleared them in the ABS module but they still remain.

Looking for any ideas as I am about to give up on this car.

Update:

Daughter took the car out and got to her destination. Came back out and it would not start, waited 5 minutes and it started. I really wish I had a clue.

Random misfires sometimes indicate a faulty ignition coil. That could cause random dying and a "crank-but-no-start" situation (especially if the engine is hot).

Went over a lot of the detail with a different mechanic today and we zeroed in on the cyl 4 misfire. Started moving the wires going into the coil pack and got the car to die. Did this 6 times in a row. Reseated the coil pack connection and no more dying when you move the wires.

CEL light was on at one point but it went back out at some point so I find that very strange.

Started the car several times after re-seating the coil connector and had no issues.

Had it started and we were standing there discussing the car and it just died. No warning, nothing, just died. Started right back up without issue.

So we have found one issue but there is something still going on. Will clear all the codes in the morning and start over.

Does the car act up when it's about to shutdown it self?

Try clearing out the MAF sensor. Some times you don't any codes for dirty MAF sensor.

Engine getting fuel correctly?
-Maybe need a new fuel filter
-Fuel pump needs to be checked.

Edit:
Oh cell(battery) light was on? Might be some electrical problem.
Check your alternator by starting the car and taking out the negative terminal from the battery and see if the car stalls or dies. If it dies/stalls then it means your alternator is going bad.

If you cant start the car, try opening the driver side door for 2-5 seconds then closing it and start the car!

I just read that "When the door is opened the fuel pump is activated for 2 seconds to build up pressure in the fuel system."


ABS
Not sure about that, mine switched on when i put my car on the jack stands for couple of days and brought the car down.
Maybe wires on the sensor got stretched out and broke or connection got loosen off.
If i find a fix i'll let you know.

Back to square one. Put in a new coil on cyl 4 and no change. Car will be running at idle and just die. Not starving for fuel die, but just die. Most of the time it starts right back up. Codes, codes and more codes. Maybe it is time for a new wiring harness. Extended warranty will kick in soon so then I don't care if the dealer replaces everything under the hood. Just don't know if I can wait the next two weeks for the repair.

I read on another post where someone basically set their ECM back to default and it had to relearn everything and that solved his problem. It wasn't a Beetle but a Golf or something else and pretty much had the same symtoms as mine. Something like changing the coding back to 0000001 on everything. Don't know how to do that or if I would want to try, mess up my ECM and I am really screwed.

Have you looked into the steering angle sensor code? Not sure what all that sensor can affect...

You also are getting ECU codes.

If you haven't, I'd try clearing the codes and see what pops up when you start the car again. Also, if you are getting more codes than the ones posted, post those as well.

Drove the car around the block and the Steering Angle Sensor went up to 1050 and locked there. Stopped the car and turned it off. Restarted it and it was back at 0, as soon as I turned the wheel it went back into the 700's as shown in the log.

Thought we were finally on to something as it wouldn't start for two days straight. Towed it in and as soon as they were going to push it into the shop they tried and it started. Has started everytime since. Codes beyond codes but they don't lead to any known issues. Still a shot in the dark. I am just about to put a new wiring harness in it and see what happens. Extended warranty has kicked in so I really don't care what they do now. They can replace everything from the bumber back and it will cost me $100 now.

With an issue like this it is a complete shot in the dark. Bad wire somewhere I am betting but finding it will be a nightmare.
