that is looking for an ideal balance of ride quality and performance.

In the front the S1 coilover for the MK2, MK3 VW/Audi Group platform features 400 lb/inch
spring rate matched to a twin tube low pressure gas damper mounted in a
heavy gold zinc plated threaded coilover housing that provides not only
great handling, but also exceptional corrosion resistance.

The rear features a 285 lb/inch coil spring & helper spring matched with a
specially tuned sport damper mounted inside the rear version of the
high quality heavy gold zinc plated threaded coilover housing.

Does anyone have any experience with these? What about durability and life-expectancy? Have been reading the FAQ suspension threads and looking at different combos of springs + struts. What is the big difference between up-grading to spring/struts for performance vs. coil-overs? The price doesn't seem to be that much different. Around $1000.00 dollars seems to the mid-point, so these look at bit too reasonable to me. Don't want to be replacing them in 6-12 months.

These are going to be very similar to FK AK Streetlines as far as durability and life expectancy (you'll probably find more reviews of those as they have been on the market longer). These do have an advantage in that they are Zinc Plated so they will have better corrosion protection. Also, these come with a 3 year warranty
As far as the difference between these and something like a Koni or H&R (which are a little over $1000), there is a quality difference, these are a very decent quality, but they are not the same level. Also, there is going to be a large difference in performance. These are designed to give you a nice drop with a good ride quality, they are not a high performance coilover. As far as a comparison between a spring/strut setup versus coilovers in performance, I really would need to know the specific products your looking at comparing, as there is too large a range of quality and performance levels with both setups. The main advantage is the ability to adjust the ride height. This will allow you to set the car at the exact height you want for looks, and if your really looking to get every bit of performance out of it, you could also have the car corner-balanced to improve handling.

I was looking at the Koni sport shocks, with either Koni or H&R lowering springs.

I do want to lower my car, but handling and performance are a priority for me over looks. In other words, if a suspension set-up lowers my car, but doesn't perform well, I'm not interested. I'd rather hold off on a purchase to save for the right kit, then buy gear that only serves the purpose of vanity.

My stock suspension is tired and worn - perfect excuse to up-grade!

Koni sport shocks will certainly outperform these coilovers. As fare as springs to pair them with, I'm not sure if Koni has sport springs for the Corrado, however performance wise I'd go with H&R springs over Koni as they tend to be firmer. Another option I would seriously consider is going with the Koni coilovers, they are going to be more than the spring/shock combo, but not a huge amount more, and they will give you the ability to dial in the height exactly where you want it, corner balance if you choose to, and they perform fantastically.
