Because the used car market is not as easily duped by marketing as the new car market.

Meaning, base models of entry level luxury cars suck testicles. Hairy ones.

Doesn't it depend on the features in question? I've always been told that base models of any car usually hold their value better, but I can see where the lack of tilt wheel (unlikely) or xenons or a sunroof might be a deal breaker on a luxury car. My new car is a base and does not have a sunroof, that's pretty much the only real option I miss. Maybe it's the segment?
Touareg Hybrids are pretty nice, and the warm fuzzies I felt while driving the hybrid was actually the fingers of all of the German tax payers trying to reach into my wallet to get their money back. (Brendan@bwalkauto)

You nailed it in your own post. There's a glut of "premiums" because "prestige premium" models go first. That and Audis aren't immune to depreciation.

it must be a regional thing. I ran a cars.com search within 500 miles of me, and found 43 2009-2010 A4s under $23,000. Then I ran the same search for 328s and found 53 of them. So, I wouldn't say A4s are any cheaper than the competition, at least within 500 miles of Kentucky.
    Apostrophes are important.

Doesn't BMW sell way more 3 series than Audi sells A4s?
And then compare price versus features- all wheel drive, tech package, sports package, etc.

Nope, just assumed 400whp in a lighter car would win, and that a 4cyl would get better mileage

Obviously a modded S4 would win, but then again with the money you're saving between the two you could buy plenty of beer to make you forget.
Stock S4's lay down low 300's at all four with a very broad torque curve. No 2.0T is going to lay down the torque like an S4 does.

Stock S4's also run high 12's not 13 flat's unless someone messed up driving it.

How much abuse like that can it take before needing repairs?

Don't know, i've been beating mine up and so has everyone else. Only clutches so far which is normal with any performance car when you start tracking it with more power than stock.

    Its because they suck.

And because there's a stupid oversupply, since they lease these cars for next to nothing.

I haven't heard of people having issues. One guy running 11's has close to 100 passes at the track without issue IIRC.

    Is it strange that I'd take a B8 S4 over a 335i, but that I'd want a 328i over a base A4?

So he's got 25 miles on his odometer without having any major issues? Congrats to him and his amazing milestone.
