I did a search but didn't see anything exactly relevant, mostly new injuries and whatnot.

Anyway, my wrists (mostly my right) hurt when doing overhead presses, benching...basically any pushing exercise. Pushups are murder...but I do them anyway. Also, it really only hurts during and for a while after load.

I used to mountain bike competitively, as well as freestyle street bmx, skateboard, snowboard etc. All the rough bumpy trails, hard drops, and wrecks have taken a toll on my wrists (not to mention I'm a graphic designer at a computer all day long now...for the past 7 years). My wrists have been a problem for quite some time now...I'm just now more seriously working out again (well...for a little over a year now).

I have pretty strong forearms and fingers (I'm a musician) and my wrists are not skinny (relative to my size).

I try to stretch my wrists before, during and after my workouts, but it still hurts pretty bad.

My question is, should I just wrap them? Is there a brace I should look into? Any particular wrist stretches I should try?

make sure your wrists are in a neutral position and don't squeeze so hard.

would a muscle imbalance cause pain in the wrists? It sounds like carpal tunnel syndrome.

I try to make sure my wrists are neutral. But with the heavier weights that gets tough. I'll work on it though.

About the carpal tunnel...that's my concern.

I doubt it would be carpal tunnel if it is in your wrist, you would notice into your forearm and/or fingers. I've had this before where it hurt on all push work with med-heavy weight. I found after studying my form, that I was bending my wrist too far back putting too much work and relying on my wrists. It took a couple months to fully heal and I concentrated on light weight, high rep work during that time. Then I gradually built back up, making certain that I did not put too much stress by bending my wrist back unnaturally.

We were talking about weights? Knowing your wife just had a baby, I thought...oh nevermind

Definitely no pain in my fingers/forearm.

I think that will be key. I paid attention to my form this morning on the bench and I definitely bend my hands back more than I should.

Maybe press with a false grip? That helped my wrists during overhead presses and jerks a lot. I agree with the other guys that ideally you should be pressing neutral. Then there's always wrist wraps.

Have you had anything diagnosed? Maybe you should see a sports med or PMNR doc.

Have you had an MRI done of your wrists to determine if you have ganglion cysts in your joints? It's surprisingly common, and although large ones will leave a small bump that you can feel, even tiny ones can cause extreme wrist paint when you flex your joint to either extreme.

Typical treatment is simply inserting a needle into the joint to break up the cyst (Not as horrible as it sounds).

    Worth looking into.
