I have seen a few post regarding stripped out rear drums. So I thought I would post pics of the one I removed last night for the newbies. If you have a lot of grinding growling noise coming from the rear of your vw this may very well be the culprit.
front view, notice the teeth are squared.

here you can see the hex worn in to the front of the drum from it being loose and the teeth almost gone and more like rounded triangles.

rear view you can see the teeth and notice how badly they were worn.

I got this one before it completely stripped and left me stranded. Always check your drums when you jack you car up for maintenance. place one hand on top of the tire, and one one the bottom. Try to wiggle the wheel. if it moves alot you will need to pull them and check them. you may also see cast dust in your hubcaps and that a good indicator also. This is for rear drums, you can check the fronts pretty much the same for wheel bearings.

hope that helps. all you smart guys can add too it what I may have forgot. My axle spline are pretty worn also.I have been talking to mike at Rancho about a new transaxle and looks like now I will just order it with new axles, fulcrum plates and shims already installed. Save me some time and head aches but will drive the cost up more . oh well got to get it right, get it tight no matter the cost.
    Smile it will get Worse!!

The "BDC" cast onto your drum JD is the "vendor code" = the actual VW subcontractor(past & or present):
