Thread: transmission ratios

  1. 08-03-2012 07:12 PM #1
    Hello to all.

Just picked up a 2012 Sportwagen last week. Tough to find with a 2.5L and 5speed manual. Had to special order it.

It replaces a 2009 same spec Sportwagen.

It has like no pickup in 4th and 5th.

It is my wife's car and I figured it just needed to break in (she's a bit of a leadfoot)

I drove it and it really has no torque in 4th and 5th. I checked the rpm in 5th and found it is like 2100rpm at 70mph.

    The 2009 turned like 3000rpm at 70mph.

    WTF?

Anyone know what they did to the transmission ratios? I did a search and found nothing.

I assume it will get great highway mpg loafing along at less than 2500rpm.

    Thanks.

They changed the gearing for 2011 my and up. They are listed on vw.com.

I wonder if the VR5 can take a 6MT out of a MKV or a MKVI without too much trouble...

I know the gearing was changed for the TDI's from 2010 and later.. maybe the same was done for the 2.5 5spd's

It's a lease so we are stuck with it.

Not much out there in a station wagon with a manual.

Went through 4 Passat wagons and then VWOA decided that we should replace that with the Routan - not happening.

Downsized to the Jetta wagon and just assumed that the 2012 would be the same as the 2009 as far as the mechanicals. They don't sell many in the US. I can't see how it pays to change the guts in the tranny. Unless it is done purely for the fuel economy.

I just looked on VW.com and can't find the gearing specs. Do you know where it is listed?

Also noticed that they claim the car has a leather wrapped, multi-function steering wheel.

No leather on mine and if by multi-function they mean it turns both left and right, I guess they are correct. No controls for the radio or bluetooth, however.

The build date is 06/12 so it is current spec.

Oh well - still better than anything else we considered.

    Thanks.
