Where is the rain sensor? Just curious. I searched, and I see how to turn it on, but not where it was really located.

      Thanks,
      Loki

Box-shaped object at the base of the rear-view mirror, where the mirror attaches to the windshield.

You can see it on this video where the man pours water on the windshield, from the water bottle, directly in line with the sensor.

Speaking of this rain sensor.... what does the car have to see to close the windows and sun roof? I had a guy activate this for me and he claimed that REAL rain has to be present to activate this.... but here is this video showing just H2O being poured out of the jug....

I can't get mine to do that! Can I assume he "forgot" something?

If I remember correctly the sensor uses infrared light and it is measuring the amount of light that comes back to it. Raindrops will scatter the light and the sensor can detect that less infrared light is coming back to the sensor...it's raining.

The same sensor is used for the automatic headlights.

Well, the auto headlights work....looks like a programming error. Can anyone give me exact steps so I can go back to my guy and let him know what he did wrong? Appreciate it!

With windows and sunroof open, stop the engine, get out of the car and close it. Pour some water at the sensor and see what happen.

I haven't tested mine yet, but I think I read somewhere the doors have to be closed and locked for the windows/sunroof autoclose to work.

Yes, the car has to be locked for the rain closure to be active.

The gentleman who programmed it is stopping by tomorrow evening or Tuesday to recheck everything....that is why I wanted specific steps...... if anyone could leave that info here it would be great....and thanks to everyone that is trying to help.

Read the instructions in the companion article to my video:
http://www.myturbodiesel.com/1000q/b...ng-feature.htm There's even screenshots. If you have an SEL Premim, even the coding may be the same.

Only other 'trick'.... Wait. The BCM has to go to sleep after hitting lock. One-three minutes then try to spray water over the top of the sensor again.

Ummmm, don't know if it was that long I waited or not..... just went out and opened sunroof and windows. Will wait 5 minutes and see.......

Nope - that didn't work either. Anyway, we're gonna check the install again. He's coming by with the cable later this evening or tomorrow.

He missed checking a box. All's well now. VW needs to be teaching their dealers what this car will do!

Confirm that rain-closing works on a 2013 TDI SEL. I had a real-world experience today leaving the sunroof open, then a thunder storm came. I was a little worried to be frank, until I walked out to the car and the sunroof was closed! The thing is, after I started the engine, the rain-sensing wiper did not respond to rain as it used to. I had to cycle the start-stop to reactivate the rain-sensing wiper.

I can't get it to work on mine. When I go into 09, CECM, Coding, the dropbox that is supposed to let me select RLS is greyed out and wont let me go to the RLS (rain light sensor). I wonder if mine has one?

Anyone else have luck with this on a 2013?

Doors unlocked? Without doors unlocked you can only talk to some but not all modules.

Good question, went back and verified all doors were unlocked. It did however not allow access to 09 at all with the doors locked. No luck on this tip though. Thanks for trying.

      Hello,

If the same sensor for autolights is used for the rain sensor (i'm not sure about it), then:

There are two diodes in the rain sensor, an emitting one, and a receiving one.

The autolight needs only a working receiving diode (for "measuring" ammount of light), the emitting diode is not needed in this case.

The rain sensor need both working. To check the emitting diode, you can point a camera to the diode, you shoul be able to "see" the light through it (you must be in a dark place of course).

You can check your camera by pointing to it a known working TV IR remote control.

      I will check mine today.

I read somewhere that for 2013 and on, the rain sensor is not being installed on anything but SEL trim levels. SE's and below are out of luck. That may be the problem if yours isn't an SEL.

      Thought I'd shed some info:

The RSL sensor is NOT the same sensor that is used for the Auto Headlights on the B7 Passats. The "Sun Sensor" for the Headlights is the hump the size of a quarter located in the top-center of the dash. The sensor at the base of the mirror assembly is for the rain functions only.

I've yet to confirm it but I have a suspicion that despite not having the function "officially" in the S and SE trims, that the sensor is still there and would only need to be activated via coding for the auto-wipers to work.

The Canadian B7 Highline comes with it installed just not activated - for the folks in the States this would be the equivalent of the SEL I believe.

A week ago a friend and myself activated it in my car, so currently I have both the auto-closing windows and sunroof if they're left open and it starts to rain and the auto-wipers sorta.

The one thing I have noticed though is that the wipers aren't actually fully automatic - as in they don't turn on by themselves when it starts raining. You still need to turn them on yourself, they just manage the actual wiping speed according to how hard it is raining.

Strange... Mine come on automatically. I have tested this by pouring a cup of water over the sensor and the wipers come on automatically right after. I believe that the wiper stalk needs to be in a specific position for the wipers to be fully auto.

I can attest mine work and are fully auto on '12 B7 NMS SE (gas) w/ roof, even in the mn snow this year.

Might be that the wiper stalk has to be left in the first 'up' position.

Auto wipers are actuated by using the intermittent position of the wiper stalk.

Not all 2013 Passats have the sensor. VWoA made a running change/deletion, and no one seems to know exactly when the deletion's occurred. Just because the rear-view mirror has the "box" around the base does NOT mean the sensor is installed.

I checked; my TDI SE w/ sunroof has a 04/2013 build date and does not have the sensor. I did not pull the headliner to see if the pigtail was up there.
