Anybody put a rack on the roof? How'd you like it? Brand, and pics?

There is no place to mount a rack, and it's specifically forbidden in the manual.

Not that those things are likely to stop everybody from adding one.

Thule make a rack for our B7 VW's that secures to the roof without holes or drilling needed. Thule make a rack for this car, and the guys at VW said I should have no problems with this rack. When I get mine, I am going for the square bars so I can put a fairing on it also.

    thule 480 traverse foot pack

Amazon has them for a lot cheaper the Thule does and I did not check eBay yet.

I actually have the Thule 480 and no problems so far! I also went on a trip with my thule box and everything was fine. No damage to the roof or the paint!

Thanks guys. Marty, hows the drag with the carrier on the roof? Anybody know why VW would say not to do it in the manual? I am looking to do it for my Bike. Anybody else got pics or experience?

With only the rack, there is wind noise but with the box, there is practicaly no noise. Just like if nothing was on top of the car.

I had a Thule rack on my previous car, a 2004 Saab 9-3 with a sunroof that I always liked to keep open when the weather permitted. I had the square bars at first, which were very noisy. I got the square bars because I like the way the fairing looked, though you can get the rounder ones which a fairing is not needed. When I put the fairing on, it significantly reduced the wind noise.

I dont have a sunroof on my Passat, so I plan on getting the 480 used with a new 44 inch (I believe) fairing since new they are not that much. I would not buy from Thule directly, you can find better prices on Amazon, eBay, or other websites that specialize in roof racks for vehicles.

I found my new fairing for my Saab from a bicycle shop's website that was in California for dirt cheap. The 480 new from Thule is expensive and I found one half the price searching for a second.

Marty, can you post a close up of the posts? How does it mount to the roof?
