Thread: Auxilary Shaft Seal O-Ring.....STILL leaking

  1. 08-04-2012 11:47 AM #1
So I have finally sourced a never ending oil leak with a couple friends last night. Its coming from the aux shaft o-ring seal. After the car runs for about a minute oil starts to seep out. This is a new seal that came with the complete gasket set I purchased from TT for the 1.8L 16v.

We have followed the instructions on the install and its still leaking. There is nothing wrong with this seal other than it seems to be to thin to fill the space it needs to? Anyone else had an issue with this before? very frustrating, please help....AGAIN lol

Does this also require a bead of black rtv as the crankshaft carrier seal did?

    Thanks again everyone in advance

Remove the two bolts holding the oil seal carrier to the cylinder block and pull out the seal carrier. Pry or hand-press the seal out of the carrier.

Reinstall the seal carrier with a new O-ring. Torque the bolts to 25 Nm (18 ft. lb.). To install the seal, lightly oil the seal and shaft's sealing surface. Fit the seal into position, and carefully drive it into place. Use care not to distort the seal as it is installed. For best results, use a seal driver such as Volkswagen special tool no. 10-203.

Sorry forgot to mention I already followed the instructions in the bentley and some that I found online. Everything has been torqued to spec and I just tried to do it again but this time using the black rtv and it is still leaking....totally mystified.....

    Thanks for the reply though!

You shouldn't need RTV, and it shouldn't leak at all if properly done...

...which leads me to believe that some error in assembly has occurred that as yet eludes you (and us). Protesting on line to the contrary will not fix the leak

I kid. Maybe post good quality macros of the sealing surfaces and step by step macros as to how you are installing everything?

Haha I understand. I have been protesting this car fighting me every step of the way for years now.

My install is exactly like the book says. Upon my next attempt I will photo every step. Currently the heat index is 100 degrees outside with high humidity so I am done for now. I did see a small amount of oil coming from the head gasket area so more inspection is needed. I agree the install shouldnt need any rtv at all and being that it still leaks with rtv I have to think the leak is coming from elsewhere. More to come when I rehydrate and find energy

Also I would like to say your thread is an inspiration as I am about to set fire to my white chariot. Its funny you responded, I have been reading your "meet my red headed stepchild" thread for over an hour now! I know you have heard this plenty (and I am only on page 8) but thank you for documenting your build so well.

Well as I knew would happen I couldn't just leave the car out there without having some sort of direction heading into the week. We found a small bur in the area the seal rests when torqued down. I need to carefully file it down. The oil seeps out right below that bur when running.

Pictures to follow in the morning.

The sealing surface is a bit jacked up from the place I had put new rod bearings in. The small leak is coming right out from where the larger of the two chunks is. Squeezes slowly out while the car is running.

I too wish to lite my scirocco on fire but if I did they I would have to shoot myself in the temple.
Give it 5 min come back to it.
Ok here is my porblem the pilot bushing in the input shaft. leak replace the clutch.
Do you have play in the int. shatf bearing?
If so it may be possible that the the leaky seal is a symtom not the problem.
I am guesing that the bearing may have worn out and give more paly, more = more room for the shaft to move up down left right.
the more play the more chance of it leaking.
Same principal as a rear diferential pinion seal.
