so i got this new beetle for free. the guy i got it from said he hooked up his jumper cables backwards......tell me what you think.....

What am I missing from the auto scan? I copy and pasted it straight from the vcds window. I just got my vagcom im still figuring this all out..... thanks

Has this car been converted from auto to manual?
Clear all codes in all modules, clean and adapt the throttle body, post new auto-scan.1998 GTI 2.0

i cleared all codes. i cleaned and adapted the tb. it is hard to start i have to crack the throttle for it to start and when it dose start it will not idle on its own i have to hold it part throttle. i did notice that the gear indicator in the cluster thinks the trans is in reverse when its in park and will not crank unless its in neutral but when you move the shift lever into reverse ans so on through the gears it is correct. im leaning on the side of bad gas for the idle issue the car sat for over a year with about 3/8 a tank in it. but as far as the trans goes i think i need to test the solenoids to see if they are bad or what.....dose any one have any info on testing these?

Sounds like a bad throttle body. Make sure the cable has proper tension.
As for the trans codes, start by checking all fuses, and check wiring/connectors for the transmission.1998 GTI 2.0

Well I got her to idle. I got me a can of either and made a few squirts and found a few vacuum leaks. Today im gonna trace down the trans wiring
