fuel gauage stops working when tanks under half full

In my b4 96 passat my fuel gauge just drops to empty when it gets to half way it used to jump back up and down but not just stays to empty now I ran out of gas the other day this is frustrating yadayada any help would be great thanks in advance my guesses are fuel pump? Or maybe the cluster is messed up.

Your fuel level sender is bad as mr. Jetta said.

But you have to buy a new fuel pump and level sender as VW changed manufactures from Pierburg to VDO and the parts are not compatable.
