Hey guys! I currently have a B5 A4 1.8TQM, but I think it is time to retire it and get a newer car. I have alot of friends with VWs, so I think I will try one out. I love the look of the passat, but the jetta isnt bad either. I was also wonder if you had the option, which would you go with... The 2.0T or the VR6? What are some things that sold you on your passat, and any input on the advantages/disadvantages for the VR6 or 2.0T, or Passat vs Jetta.

You'll probably get some decent replies to your question, however, it would be easier to provide feedback if you provided a little more information such as.....how much initial budget to spend.....primary use of car.....tolerance and annual budget for repairs.

I had a 2002 A4 3.0 Quattro brand new on a lease. Great car. Went from that to a lease on a 2006 Passat 2.0T. Was doing alot of miles and needed to cut back and loved the look of the then new Passat. Had that for 3 years and put 71,000 miles on it! Was also a great car. Had no issues with the car at all until about 2 weeks before lse was over and the engine coils went. The engine coils has since been recalled.
I now have an 07 passat 2.0t that I bought as CPO with 32k on it. I just turned 101,000 miles on it today! It has been one of my all time favorite cars. I do about 32-33k a year on a car. The things I like about the Passat better than the A4 seems stupid but when you are in the car as much as me it makes a difference. Like the places in the doors for the water bottles. The dual sunvisors. The drivers personal glove box, love that for the wallet! I just used the umbrella in the door tonight. I have the sport pkg II and the seats are the most comfortable i ever had. I also have the Bi-Xenon lights which I love. Though the one light has been giving me issues from time to time. It doesn't always turn around corners. The trunk is bigger than the A4 and so is the backseat. The car is just perfect to me! In my A4 some the buttons started peeling after the first year! Even now I have not had one button peel on my Pasat!! I do wish I had the Quattro though! When I bought my car I could of bought an 07 3.6 with 4-motion that was also CPO on the dealers lot. I almost did that but I stayed with the 2.0T because of the gas mileage.
It does amaze me sometimes when I hear of some people have some issues. I guess I'm lucky! :-)
Good luck to you! I couldn't be happier!

Go for the '08 and up, more reliable than previous years, especially the '06 (first year redesign).

I have both an 08 VR6 4motion and an 07 2.0T. both have been rock solid thus far.
Advantages of VR6: Gobs of power, ready to pull you out of any situation. Throaty sound from the engine/exhaust
Disadvantages of VR6: Very thirsty for fuel. My worst around town tank got 9mpg!
Advantages of 2.0T: Great gas mileage, best highway tank 36mpg! Easily modifiable.
Disadvantages of 2.0T: not as much power (although for a 4 cylinder, its pretty decent), Cam follower can wear out early (hasn't happened to me yet). And with only FWD, it's too easy to spin the front wheels.
You can't go wrong with either one. The B6 Passat is a great car!

One note on this, if you go after the 2.0T with the TSI engine (2008.5+) it won't have the cam follower wear in the same manner as the FSI engine.
It IS easy to spin the front wheels, turbo kicks in at such a low RPM, you really can't escape it. Overall a great car, just like any VW/Audi...get ready for repair bills if you just blindly go out and buy one. Research, research, research. I personally went with the 2.0T just because I'm a sucker for a turbo, BUT as I've learned recently...once my wife is done with her xB she is taking possession of my B6 and I can buy whatever else I want. So I am sorely tempted to get a VR6 Waggie just to get the fun of both worlds.

A 2008 VR6 4 motion in good condition with low miles will run between 15-20k.
You can get a 2009-2010 B6 for like 20k.
That can give you an idea of pricing. What its like when car is older and more miles.

The previous generation Jetta's are great, but if you are concerned about legroom for your rear passengers or if you have kids (or plan to have kids in the near future) I would go with the Passat. It's both a great family car and fun to drive as well. We own an early 2008 B6 which has the FSI and not the new TSI engine but 'knock on wood' it has been very reliable so far.

I came from the 2001 A4 1.8T myself, great car, loved it all of 6 years. But it was time to get something slightly bigger and still as sporty, so after a few weeks of research I pulled the trigger on a 2008 2.0T Passat. So far I love the car, but as many people have already suggested I went with a CPO & extended warranty. It's already paid for its self with a new valve body replacement. Other than that I haven't had any issues, and have been enjoying the bigger trunk space and rear leg room compared to the '01 A4. The extra gear on the Passat compared to the A4 equals better gas millage on long highway trips. The one thing i do miss is the AWD in the winter, so far it's handled it's own with the FWD and DWS tires, in the light snow we had last year.

The wife and I just bought a 2010 Passat 2.0T. It is a CPO car w/ 26k miles on it. The DSG is great, the 2.0T is surprisingly capable. As others have said, it is hard to keep the front tires planted especially when accelerating around corners; 1/2 throttle and you can easily light the inside tire up. The interior is very nice and our car came with the RNS510 nav unit which was an added bonus.

Thanks for all the feedback guys, im taking all of it into consideration! Im looking to spend as much as 18k. All the talk about spinning the wheels with acceleration, kinda makes me sad leaving my quattro =(. So many options!

The CC has a great look to it, the things that pushed me away from it (JMHO) was no longer having projector low beams, and no LED tail lights. Simple stuff but it just made it feel like buying a higher end car with lower-tech than the B6, which made me sad.
I mean....I've installed Euro tail lights with 2 stage LEDs that are red and blink amber... how cool is that? How many other cars out there right now have that!?
I still say the B6 Passat from 2008.5-up is a great option to look for.![]()

We looked at the CC as well and I also thought it was a bummer that the CC didn't have projectors or LED tails. Other drawbacks were that we couldn't find any with a sunroof (which is important to me) and you can only fit a max of 4 people in the car. We don't have 5 people in our car very often at all but its nice to be able to do it when you need to.
Pluses of the CC are the interior and ride. The dash is the same but the seats are awesome IMO. And the ride is much more taught and crisp than the Passat; better handling from the factory. However, eventually we plan to put our Passat on coilovers so ride is really a non-issue.
I had a hard time deciding between the Passat and CC but in the end the Passat won and we haven't looked back.

I tested both before going with the 3.6.
I thought the 3.6 felt better, but the one i bought also has more bells and whistles than any 2.0's I drove. I've heard the 2.0 is more fun to trick out.
If you go with the 3.6, definitely look up the oil bolt threads
But I love my 3.6

I love my car. If you have a warranty, cool. If you are mechanical enough to diagnose and fix things yourself, cool.
The gas mileage is fantastic, especially for a car with this much power. My cousin used to brag about how great his cobalt was on gas...he still doesn't believe me when I tell him what I get.
The 3.6 is sick but the mileage sucks.
Get a 2.0T and get it tuned and you'll be happy with the power output.
Good luck!

All of your feedback has been amazing guys, i really appreciate it! Pretty sure from the research ive done, and from what you guys have mentioned... Im going to go with the 2008.5+ passat 2.0T! I am very excited to start looking and joining the passat family!

Good to hear, but make sure you go out and try to test drive both of them! The VR6 is not a shabby setup AT ALL, but you also can't go wrong with some delicious turbo.
Keep us up to date on what you find!

That's why because you, and also myself have the FSI motor.BUT I love my sport pkg on mine, wouldn't have it any other way. If you go with a mfg date of 07 or be safe and go 08 and up they have the TSI not as many issues. I have had about 2k in work but I was CPO so they pd. The main issue with the FSI is the cam follower wearing causing HPFP pump issues and cam issues. VWoA has issued an extended warranty for this issue to 10 yrs or 120k miles, believe that's right on the mileage. So we are safe from that problem at least until then.
