Thread: Does this sound like a bad coilpack?

  1. 08-05-2012 06:59 PM #1
Car was running great. Got on it a little bit and come to a red light. Car sounds like a Subaru and has less power. Baby it all the way home and CEL blinks whenever I give it too much gas. Pull each wire one at a time and the car runs worse. Each wire is getting a spark so im praying that its just a bad coilpack. Could it be something else?

Cleaning the MAF sensor doesn't always fix a bad one.

No it has been running ****ty since that episode. The CEL stays constant if I don't give it too much gas. When I go past a certain point it blinks.

It could be a coilpack-caused misfire. The only way to be sure is to read the trouble code(s) stored in the ECU.

Swapped out coilpack for a known good one. Scanned codes and im getting P0301 and P0306 which is misfire in cylinder 1 and 6. I swapped plugs and wires for a old set I had laying around and that didn't fix anything. Next thing to replace is the MAF. Praying that is the problem.

1 and 6 are fired at the same time, I would now wonder if your having a signal issue from the ecu.

Think it could be the GIAC chip? My buddy said MAF or Cam Position Sensor.

A bad MAF sensor is unlikely to cause a misfire code, but good luck.

unlikely unless the chain skipped, is it tossing a code for it?

A little update. Replaced coilpack and MAF. It doesn't idle smooth, but still has plenty of power. Got rid of the P0171 code, but now I have a P0301 code for cylinder 1 misfire. Changed the plug and wire with the ones that were on the car previous to this set, but nothing changed.
