Thread: Painting Calipers?

  1. 08-06-2012 01:57 PM #1
Just wondering if anyone has painting there Tiguan's brake calipers? I really like the way the red calipers look on the GTI and I'm considering painting my Tiguans. I have a 2010 Tiguan S Black. What are your guys thoughts is the Tiguan a sporty enough car to have painting calipers or is it a daily driver SUV and should just be left alone? I've been going back and forth with the idea.

It is your call as to whether or not to paint them red. Personally I don't even like the red calipers on the GTI. It isn't as if they are special high performance calipers that require attention drawn to them. IMO black or a very dark grey look best since those colors hide dirt and clean up the area behind the wheel.

As far as paint goes...I've had very good results with Duplicolor engine enamel on brake calipers and other suspension components. They offer a wide variety of colors if you want to spice things up.

    +1

I like the clean, inconspicuous look. Even on my Tig, which is (wild cherry) red.

What kind of wheels do you have? Might look good if they're something with big openings to show what you've done. Otherwise, could be a waste of time. ---Mike

I painted mine dark grey to match my Tig (pepper grey). Looks much better than the bright silver that came from the factory.

for those of you that are painting your calipers, are you just taping/covering everying or are you actually removing the caliper from the vehilcle (disconnecting brake lines and having to bleed your brakes upon reinstall) and spraying?

I hand-painted mine with a brush. I used the high heat engine paint. By doing that I didn't need to worry about covering anything or removing the caliper. It's safe, and effective!

When I have done this in the past I would unmount the caliper and hang it further up in the wheel well. Less to tape off since the pads are out. Just tape off the brake line, bleed valve, etc and go at it.
