I just want to verify that the coilpacks / sparkplugs are actually bad on my car before spending money on them. As of recently, my car has been bogging every now and then, usually in 3rd or 4th gear. This was a quick surge in power that would go away. But as of today, upon starting my car, it felt terrible, with a rough idle and blinking cel. I immediately pulled over and tried restarting the car about 3 times to see if it would start normally so I could take it home. Unfortunately each time led to a terrible idle, and the car barely turned over. Do you all think this is definitely a coilpack issue?

There could be 10,000 different things causing the issue.
Are you throwing a CEL or anything?
Find somebody local with a vagcom and scan your car.

    I empathize with your situation.

I have a CEL and a terrible idle, misfires in Cyls 1 and 3, EPC, etc. Replaced Coil Packs on 1 and 3, cleared codes, started the engine and immediately got CEL. Rescan showed misfire in Cyl 3. Took it to local Euro mechanic, who diagnosed loss of or very low compression in Cyl 3.

We're guessing valve issue at this point. Not wild about my local dealer. So I am going to flatbed it one town over and try my luck there. Most people I have talked to like this other dealer a bit better.

If your car is misfiring, I would replace all the coils and all the sparkplugs together. That's just me though. I ordered bosch plugs and new coils, and will be installing them thurs. Hopefully this fixes my issue. Good luck

Thanks. When I get it back, I'll check the plug on 3. The plugs are new with less than 1,000 miles on them.

Turns out my problem was a bad fuel injector. My car would barely run / drive / idle without terrible bogging or shaking. The dealership needs to find out if they want to cover me and theyll let me know monday............

I just heard back from my not exactly local dealer a few minutes ago. I had similar symptoms and Vag-Com showed a misfire on cyl. 3. They checked compression and it was low on 3. Took the intake off to check. The injector on 3 was stuck open. They are replacing the injector and that plug under the powertrain warranty and are hoping that solves the problem. I asked how this was related to the low compression. They said that too much fuel in the chamber could cause one of the rings to unseal. They are hopeful that if they fix the injector and add a little oil to the compression chamber, the ring will reseal and everything will work fine. If not, they will dig deeper.

So far, this hasn't cost me anything fortunately.

I asked about the carbon build up just for grins. They said it was typical for my mileage (49K), but not too bad.

Faulty injector? Parts just fail sometimes I suppose. Mine seems to be the worst case scenario of that sort of parts failure.

My car's head body is currently on the shop floor with pictures being sent to VW to determine if the valves need to be replaced along with the ring(s) replacement.

    Update:

Getting new head assembly all the way back up to the intake and a rental car until it's done.
