2008 R32 with 106K. Have always used Mid Grade (89) octane since owning. Drive approx 800 miles a week. Has always run exceptionally well up until about two weeks ago. Three weeks ago installed Borla Cat Back. Still Ran Great. After two weeks the engine started stalling out when you floor the car which coincided with the Heat Wave we just had. Several weeks in the triple digits.
VW Dealer did a diagnostic and found no Codes. VW dealer sent info off to VW and they said I had regular gas, (which I did have mid-grade). I was told to stop using mid-grade and use 91 0r 93 octane. Service Writer told me I had carbon build-up from regular gas.
Today I had the BW Induction Service done and no change, engine still stalls out.
At this point, I a not sure how to proceed to correct the stalling. I am leaving tomorrow on an 800 mile busiess trip. the engine runs great up to about 3/4 throttle or when floored. I have filled up today with shell 93 octane and will continue to use 91 or higher.
Is anyone familiar with this problem or can offer a solution?

VW dealer has offerd no solutions or seems to care that the car is stalling. Just wants to blame the use of regular gas?

    Reminds me of the recall:

but the facts don't quite line up. Maybe seeing a "second failure" showing up north of 100K miles?

Check fuel filter and pump, sounds like the pump is unable to deliver adequate fuel under heavy load conditions.....

My guess is restriction/loss of flow is the answer........

    Good luck

Have you had the EVAP recall done yet? As stated it does sound mildly similar.

I am gonna through a wild guess out there and say gunked up throttle body. Right before I traded it, mine with ~116,000 on the odometer started stumbling a little when you floored it. It did give me a MAF related code (CEL) but it was intermittent.

I picked up MAF cleaner and some TB cleaner and went to town on the intake system. Once I was done she ran lik ea champ once again.

these would be the first two things I would do / check after scanning with vcds.

buddy of mine was riding the TAT on his KTM (not a vw or even a car I know) he had exact same symptoms you described while in the middle of colorado, limped it to a ktm dealer, savy mechanic fixed it in 5 minutes with new fuel filter and cleaning out fuel delivery system.

Confused as to why you would use 89 octane for as long as you have when the fuel door specifically says to only use a minimum of 91.

Fuel components may be shot as already has been mentioned in this thread. I'd hope it's just that.

Is it still very hot by you? Did you hear any pinging/knocking from the engine when you got on the throttle?
Higher octane fuel has a higher combustion temperature to prevent ping/knock in high compression engines like ours, which is why you should be using 91 or 93. It's possible that you were getting ping/knock and the engine compensated.

Given that it says in the manual, and the inside of the fuel door, "minimum 91 octane," I actually side with the dealer on this.

Why on earth were you putting 89 in it?
I have installed most of the popular bolt-on mods for a 2008 R32, minus suspension work. I know a lot about electronics and car audio, and have experience with VCDS ("vagcom"). I'm a radar/lidar countermeasure enthusiast. I like track days, autocross, and US Highway 129. I love aural pleasure.

Was gonna say this...I mean the engine is tuned and designed for atleast 91 oct...gonna guess its because you are using crap gas and have been so long that your engine has been retarded for so long, it can't handle WOT.

True, but a bunch of guys on the internet aren't going to be a whole lot better.

I mean, some of the answers I got to my "sputtering start" thread were a little
