A few weeks ago, I had some battery issues. Long story short, I ended up changing the battery.

A few days later I began to have an issue with my coil/ICM. I decided it was probably a good time to do the delete and conversion to 2.0FSI coils.

Before doing that, I used a generic hand held scanner to clear codes and see which would come back just to have a baseline for after the conversion.

At this point, car is not starting at all and I'm getting smell of fuel after cranking. I pull out plugs and see they are soaked with gas.

I probably shouldnt have, but at this point I went and converted everything over, expecting that when I was done it would start....

Meanwhile, at this point the car cranks but doest start, and it seems as if fuel is dumping into the cylinders. Hooking up to an Elmscan5 and Scantool software, I get absolutely no codes (it IS connecting to ECU to some extent). Im not even able to get the cable to work at all with VCDS lite..

So I have NO codes and a car that turns over but wont start and smells strongly of fuel when I'm cranking it.. Im reluctant to buy anymore tools or software at this point; I'm thinking maybe I fried the ECM, or could it be as simple as throttle body adaptation?

    Any ideas/suggestions would be fantastic!

98 AEB 5mt. Codes were P0304, P0302, P0300 and one other which I dont recall-- but something to do with one of the O2 sensors. I suspect that may have been due to the flooding? Also, I decided to pull apart the ICM and found it was literally fried.. one of the comonents had burned up and bubbled away the silicone it was embedded in..

Do you have anyone with a VCDS (Vag-Com) in your area to scan ?

    P0302

    P0300

Sounds like your ICM is bad. I really really really recommend getting rid of it and converting to the newer style design coils for the later 1.8t's.

The ICM WAS bad.. if you read the above you see that I DID do the conversion.. but I'm still having an issue. I'm going back through my connections and checking grounds right now, but what I seem to be seeing is very intermittent spark (using a spark tester that connects between plug and coil pack)
So I'm still thinking I may have a ECU issue. I have fuel entering the cylinders, but I don't seem to have consistent spark to ignite the fuel.

EDIT: I managed to scan with VCDS Lite, but same as the other scans, there are no codes. I'm going through the VCDS literature to see what exactly I should be checking for.

Have you replaced the ICM yet?

What makes you think it's not the distributor?

Not to be a dick... but did you READ the post? I did the conversion and deleted the ICM.. and there is NO distributor on a B5 AEB..

My '99 wagon is flooding once it's up to op temp and it gets shut off and restarted within 10min. Doesn't do it evey time, but quite often. If I pull the pump fuse restart @ WOT it will start and clear itself, but I must reinsert the fuse a moment after starting or it will run out of fuel. I have not diagnosed it yet, but I'm leaning toward FPR or coolant sensor/sender. If I figure it out I'll post it
