So I sucked it up and got windows 7. It's installed without problems. The computer is lightning fast. However, Minecraft still only runs at like 30 frames per second. I know I don't have a graphics card but that shouldn't matter. It has something to do with the rendering. I'm not like trying to cry and ask vortex to fix my game, but I am curious as to why my 1.6ghz i7 ran this at double the fps as this 3.4ghz phenom ii x4 black edition. The only thing I can think of is the graphics card.

Also the system has 4gb ddr3 1333 and the old system had 8gb at 1600 I believe.

Does the FPS dip or is it always at 30fps? Make sure V Sync is disabled in your Catalyst Control Center. V Sync limits FPS.

Mismatched ram would show no noticeable drop in FPS. You MAY see a slight dip in synthetic benchmarks but I am not even sure about that.

Yeah I will try the v sync thing. I forgot about that. The fps fluctuate between like 28 and 40.

That is an older mobo, so definitely check on bios and graphic updates.

That is also a good call. All I did was install the drivers from the disk.

Also- if you are running win 7 64 bit, download Java 64 bit.

      http://download.cnet.com/Java-Runtim...-75317067.html

      And from minecraft wiki:

      Increasing your FPS

Turn down your render distance (default keys: F3 + F. You can also press ESC and change it under options.).
Set in game graphics from Fancy to Fast.
Do not run other programs while Minecraft is open.
Turn off Aero in Windows Vista/7.
Disable compositing (= desktop effects) on GNU/Linux (Compiz, Kwin, Clutter, etc.).
Check video card drivers and make sure antialiasing is turned off in the global settings.
It is known that looking upwards can sometimes increase your FPS.

And that sucks about having to spend money on Windows, but still check with your school and see if you can get a rebate/discount.
I think UBUNTU is cool, but Windows is what you need to play any real games.
Wine will allow some games to work, but for any new big game it is a problem.
You would get kicked from any room playing BF3 or MW3 (punkbuster) if the game even worked well enough to play.

I know you have already spent more than you wanted to (buying Windows 7)..

But here is a new HD 6450 for $9.99 after rebate.

And since I threw it out there- here is an HD 6670 for 48 bucks after rebate.

I know. He may be able to go ask for a refund to get to that price though. I think MC does price guarantee.

A refund on used electronic parts?

And the OP got a 3.4 965 Black Edition, not that Bulk 2.8 oem chip.
Not that it is a bad chip, but the 965 is a much better chip.

Yeah, this system sh*ts lightning on my 1.6 i7m alienware. I do want a graphics card seeing as how thats all I don't have at this point. I'm looking around the $60-$80 price range for a GPU at the moment. But the cheaper the better!!! I don't want to have to deal with rebates to be honest. I can possibly hit microcenter before I leave for WVU sunday if they have an amazing deal. Any help looking would be very appreciated!

6670 is probably the best in that range.

WVU? My dad is an alumni.
      Go Mountaineers.

And I am swapping out the PSU and GPU on a combo deal I purchased.. I reverted back to the on board to make sure the PSU install went good before adding the new GPU.

My on board is HD 4200, and my FPS at the high full screen settings on Minecraft dropped to 10-20 fps where it was 45 to 65 fps with my HD 5670.
So the GPU makes a big difference when in fullscreen mode.
      Now we know.

And I agree on the rebates- they suck.

And a DDR5 card (faster memory is way better than more GPU memory) that can be over clocked is my bet for your price range.

Here is an HD 6670 with DDR5 for $91.99 free shipping.
--->Use code TECH101 for 15% off- making it $78.19 before tax.

It's not a super powerful card, but is not bad either.
      You can oc too.

      LET'S GO!......MOUNTAINEERS!

To be honest that card is a bit on the high side of the price range but I will definitely look into it.

And that's good to know about Minecraft. I get about 55 stable fps now and I assume it will about double with a good card.

Are GDDR3 cards basically out of the question then? Even the top end ones? They can be had for incredibly cheap.

What card? The memory speed definitely make a difference.

See this hierarchy chart- the ones sold in DDR3 and DDR5 are listed at different performance levels.
But it also depends on what you need it for.

      http://www.tomshardware.com/reviews/...ew,3107-7.html

The one is a good deal for the performance, but it is an old card (probably way more power hungry).

      http://www.microcenter.com/single_pr...uct_id=0361585

      No Direct X 11 though.

Wow, they still make 4830s? I have one in my HTPC that has been going for 3+ years. I think it was about $125 when I got it new. I would not spend the money on the 4830 when a 6670 is only a $20 more and much more efficient and has dx11. Not that minecraft uses dx11.

Nevermind. It was $84 and I got it 4/14/09.

Open box HD 7750 DDR5 for $92 at MicroCenter.

      http://www.microcenter.com/single_pr...uct_id=0385360

I think it runs 100% off the mobo power (no PCI-e power plugs).
So that makes it the most powerful card available that is easy on power supplies.

      nothing nice, just a GT 520 2GB GDDR3.

Bought it to hold me over for a bit until I get a real card.

Why buy this you ask? It only cost me $9.99 at time of purchase. No mail in rebates. Microcenter had one open box so I jumped on it.

Minecraft at 1440x900 fullscreen went from 40fps to 120fps. In the native window size it runs at 250fps.

      I say good purchase!

For $9.99 no rebates it's a real deal.
      For $69.99 (newegg price) it's a joke.

And just getting a modern card -even a weak one- with dedicated ram helps a lot in basic games like minecraft. I think the shared memory becomes a serious bottle neck (for even the newer better spec integrated chips).

I am shocked of the improvement. I wonder how much ram you had allocated to the integrated. I know it did not automatically allocate as much as needed like my i7/i5 setups I have seen. When I check the system tools in win7 I had 4gb of video ram on a system with only 4gb total ram installed. So it was automatically set to use as much as needed. When I set up my 760 and 780 AMD chipset boards they were only set in bios to have 128mb. I had to manually turn them up in bios to the max 512mb setting. I would be interested to know if that was not the cause of your problem. You could always disable your discrete card in the device manager and restart into bios and play around if you wanted to see if that would have helped. I mean a $9 card that is rated at around the same level as the best intel 4000 graphics chip is not too bad. Its also quite a few steps above your HD3200 on your AMD board. Not a bad buy at all for $9.

Glad you are happy with your setup now. What was your total investment?
