My daughter's fiance bought this car and we fixed it up as a daily driver for him, so he wouldn't have to drive his gas guzzling truck 150 miles a day.
It was an automatic, and we converted it to a manual transmission with a MKIII DFQ, and a new Sachs Clutch set. Lots of new parts including ignition switch, ignition lock cylinder, and parts under the hood. Smogged no problem.
Last month he blew a radiator hose and continued to drive it. It got so hot that the coolant flange, and the splash shield under the valve cover melted. The plastic from the splate shield interferred with the camshaft, jamming it and breaking the timing belt. He cleaned up the plastic residue, and replace the timing belt and tensioner, and the engine starts and runs, but now the engine has a top end clicking, so, I'm thinking that there may be a bent valve or two, and he says that there's coolant in the oil, so the head gasket must be blown.
The body's in good shape with a couple of minor bruises, the sunroof works, and the car has manual windows, so they all work. The seats have been recovered, so the interior's decent, and the heatercore is not leaking. Just replaced the ac compressor so the ac's working.
We located a crashed 95 that had a recent VW factory crate engine installed, and I tried to get him to buy the car for the engine, but I went out and bought a 99 Ford Escort instead. Personally I think the Jetta's a better car, but he's got the Escort (I've driven the Escort, and I'm not impressed).
$1000 Cash will buy the car. Get it before he retires it under the State of CA Retirement Program for $1000, and the car gets crushed. It's really in nice shape, and needs a new owner who will replace the head, or the engine (I can tell you where the crashed car, the Seller wants $650 for the whole car, and it has a manual transmission and a new clutch set).
PM me for details or to come see the car in Riverside.
