Crash at 2:44 Original description: This is unprecedented footage of a small airplane crash from inside the cockpit from two different views. Miraculously, everyone survived.
The pilot will make a full recovery and the rest of us escaped with
superficial injuries and feel very lucky to be alive . This trip was
much anticipated and due to our excitement we had our Gopro cameras
filming at various times. After flying up into the mountains for a hike
in the Frank Church River of No Return Wilderness we were planning on
flying to a small mountain town for dinner. Due to warming
temperatures we had a hard time gaining altitude. After taking off we
hit an air pocket that made us rapidly loose altitude, pushing us down
into the trees. Credit: outdoors to stay

Scratch one more Stinson
Glad I seem to have picked a good, sturdy plane though! Pretty amazing that everyone is pretty much OK!

I hate to speculate, but it appears they could've been over gross on a high density altitude day?
Certainly had plenty of room to put it down in the grass after becoming airborne.
At least they're ok!

Like I said over in OT on this video, I hope the FAA whacks him in the nuts for this. What an idiot.

Yeah... I'd say so! I mean, I doubt he gets more than 200 AGL that entire video. Obviously struggling to keep it in the air the entire time. I love the description "hit a pocket of air"... More like, couldn't climb with the terrain climbing... Its pretty telling that the stall horn is going off for a while before they hit the trees.
Yup. And I quote:
I'd say its pretty black and white...Each pilot in command shall, before beginning a flight, become familiar with all available information concerning that flight. This information must include—
(2) For civil aircraft other than those specified in paragraph (b)(1) of this section, other reliable information appropriate to the aircraft, relating to aircraft performance under expected values of airport elevation and runway slope, aircraft gross weight, and wind and temperature.

Unless he had some aftermarket horn installed, Stinson's don't have stall horns. One thing I find interesting though, is that you thought you heard a stall horn, and someone else on another forum asked why there wasn't a stall horn...
Also, the mixture was full rich, and apparently density altitude was 8-9000'. So in addition to the engine making 75% or less of rated power, it was running way too rich to make optimum power at that DA. [/student pilot armchair piloting]

Did you see how long the take off run was, and notice that he got airborn for about 5 seconds, and then touched back down? 1. That's a failure for a soft field takeoff. 2. Indication the aircraft is unable to climb, or even maintain altitude. There are always many links in an aircraft chain. Break only one and you won't have the accident. In this case the links are probably.
Field elevation
Time of day "hot"
overloaded (possibly)
extremely long take off run
Aircraft settled back down
another long take off run.
A/C unable to climb.
Ego attitude from Pilot (possible)
I'm sure there are more.
Remedy just one of these links and the accident probably would not have occurred.
If you are crashing, take your hands off the control yoke to avoid breaking your hands/ thumbs. That's the most common injury to a pilot. did you see his hands after the crash? ouch.

It also wasn't the pilot's first crash due to poor pre-flight planning apparently.

This may be a dumb question on my part, but how did you find that out? Is there a link to the details of his previous crash?

NTSB Narrative Summary Released at Completion of Accident
The pilot reported that he intended to fly his airplane on a cross-country flight over high mountainous terrain. After takeoff, the pilot climbed to 9,500 feet mean sea level (msl) in order to fly over mountains. He subsequently descended to 8,500 feet msl, and then he attempted to climb back to 9,500 feet to clear additional mountains. This second climbing effort diminished his fuel reserve, so the pilot opted to divert to a 7,160-foot msl uncontrolled airport short of his destination. While flying over the airport to evaluate its runway's condition, the pilot noted that the runway was covered with snow. The pilot opined that because of the airplane's low fuel state, it was prudent for him to land. The pilot made a soft-field landing on the runway. During rollout, the airplane's wheels penetrated the snow-covered surface, the airplane nosed over, and both wings and the empennage broke.
NTSB Probable Cause Narrative
The pilot's encounter with soft, snow-covered terrain while executing a precautionary landing.

I saw the wreckage of this plane at the Boise airport a couple weeks ago up close in person, it looked BAD. I was at first told nobody survived it and I believed it, but later got a clarification of the story. I was told that they just had too much weight on too hot a day.
