Everything I've heard of the Canon 55-250 is that it is THE cheap zoom lens to get. Look on craigslist as well, I regularly see them being sold for nothing. Not the fastest lens in the world, but certainly capable enough![]()

So I wanted to get a zoom relatively cheap because I won't use it much except for for shots of my dog running around and a few other things maybe. Only thing I know is that I probably want something with stablization.
the two I found at at BHphoto is
1. Sigma 50-200 OS
2. Canon 55-250 IS
I know the Sigma has a non rotating front if i get a polarizer it wont become a pain but i figure the canon probably has better optics throughout its range.
I know no one person has probably had both but if you had to decide.
And just for pics for clicks this is a shot i took with a friends very old quantary zoom i borrowed that made me want to get my own

Hard to beat the 55-250 for the money (there was some place that had them for $149). If you can swing the extra $$ though, look for a used 70-200 f/4L non-IS. Will probably set you back ~$500, but it's an awesome lens.

thanks fellas, the Canon it is. I wish i could swing something more but I can't justify spending more than 200 right now

Also check FM classifieds. There are several BNIB 55-250's for the $140-160 range.
I'm just here for the sanctimonious circle jerk.
