Thread: recent vacation in Berlin. car pics inside!

  1. 08-08-2012 06:09 PM #1
hey CLers i just got back from vacation in Berlin. i've never been to Europe before, but i'd been wanting to visit Germany for some time and wanted to make that my first stop. anyway, besides doing all of the usual touristy walking around, i did come across some interesting (to me) cars along the way and thought i would share some pics.

mind you, most of these were snapped as i was just walking by. i didn't want to spend any more time than i had to to snap a pic, so what you see is what you get. i haven't visited the CL in some time, so a lot of these cars were unfamiliar to me -- though most of you CL veterans, especially those who love the German cars, will find nothing new.

also, i tried to post everything alphabetically by make, though i may have easily listed something incorrectly. anyways, enjoy!

Some nifty cars in there, I especially like the Bimmer 3-door hatch, I want!

European cars look so..European, like they designed every one and said,

"Perfect! Now, squish it --->| |<--- way!"

interesting thing about the dealerships i saw there is that they're showroom based. i don't know if it's because space is a premium there, or they just don't want to have inventory laying around on a lot like we do here in the US, but if you wanted to see something that wasn't in the showroom, you had to drive somewhere else. i didn't get specifics since obviously i wasn't buying anything, but no huge auto mall lots to be found there.

yeah a lot of the Euro cars that i saw there seemed to have a little extra "finesse" to them. not every single one mind you, there were definitely some clunkers there too, but there was something extra about those cars that i can't put my finger on.

strangely also, the car i found myself gawking at the longest was the Chevy Orlando, which is the white SUV in the middle of the list. i'd never seen or heard of it before, but there was something about the lines on that thing that really caught my eye.

what surprised me the most about coming back from vacation is seeing the sheer number of trucks and SUVs on the road. i saw a few while in Germany, but i mostly saw hatches and wagons. i'm not sure if that's just what they prefer there, or maybe there's some kind of economic reason -- either way, we do love our big vehicles in the USA.

Wasn't the Veyron at the Volkswagen Forum in Unter den Linden? If so, I don't think it's exactly a dealership per se, but more like a showroom just to display their latest models of each brand.

I took this pic there in 2009.

yes, that's the exact same spot you're talking about at Friedrichstrasse and Unter den Linden, and you're right, those were showrooms. though i did talk to someone there at the VW spot and that's when they mentioned that if i wanted to see more cars for purchase, it meant a drive across town. also, probably the coolest thing i brought back from my trip was a brochure for the Scirocco R which i grabbed from the same showroom.

I think it just comes down to Europe not have the land expanse that Americans are afforded so they have a modest showroom at a good location and then non-descript storage in a part of town where accessibility or exposure aren't a concern.

well i tell ya, i'd never seen one and i did an honest double-take as i was walking by. it looked familiar enough, though it wasn't something that i recognized.

Oh that's just not an impression, Germany is "wagon land" to me aswell. As for hatchbacks they're just much more practical when you live in a city.

More like the Caddy version of the Saab 9-3. Same steering wheel, same dash bits, same door skins, same mirrors...
