Some of those expensive car's layout(like the 430 or the Aston) looks more like an exhaust guard than anything else...the metal surround protects the grill or the plastic trim piece from the actual piping....
Even Zonda though the tip outside is still more cosmetic, that 4 piece tip is bolted to the mount where the actual runners plugs into them...

i believe the reason that the manufacturers do this is that, the exhaust is a part of the vehicle that moves around a bit(see any clip of exhaust under acceleration) and the exhaust tips on these vehicles are fixed into their bumper surround.
under acceleration the exhaust WILL move and possibly tear the tip out of its fixed position, and cause many, many warranty repairs, etc.....

These "fake exhaust tips" merely are just a exit hole in the already low body panel (bumper). As time goes on and cars become more and more sleek lined, they want to create the most simplistic and high end look. Exiting the exhaust through the bumper creates a way to no longer have a big obtrusive pipe from coming under the bumper. Higher end car makers seem to go this route because the market they sell their product to simply cares about stupid things of this nature. I personally like the pipe coming from under the bumper, as I am a person who loves the sound and look of a good exhaust system.

This thread died quick when some of you were shocked to see some of your OWN favorite exotics suffer from the same disease.........otherwise this would have been 20 pages of hunting down the LFA.

i can't find a picture, but the VW Phaeton had fairly narrow rectangular exhaust outlets behind the actual decorative bumper exhaust outlets.
