Thread: Going to check out an GTI

  1. 08-09-2012 02:22 PM #1
So I'm looking at a 1987 16v GTI, The things I know about it is that it just lost first gear and could use a new down pipe. They are asking 2,200 for it but I plan on talking them down due to the transmission. Any one have any suggestions on what I should look for when I got look at the car?

Post pics. Find out actual condition. Since its missing a gear i wouldn't post over 1200.

Lost first gear? Hmm - could be as simple as a shifter linkage adjustment but given the age of the car, it's probably just as easy to replace the transaxle.

Factor in the cost of a replacement trans, a rebuild on the replacement trans and a clutch when deciding your price. Downpipes aren't cheap for those cars because they're unique to the 16v (pipe diameter) and they use a flex joint that's easier to replace than repair.

Unless the car is otherwise perfect with under 100K miles, $2200 sounds about $1200 too high...

Ill post pics later once I get home, also forgot to put the mileage in the OP but it has 160k on it. Body wise from what I can tell from the pics it looks just about mint except for the hood. The hood is black but I don't know if its because it had been painted that way or if its a non painted replacement hood.

While I'm at it, is there anyone in the Parkesburg PA or claymont DE area that wants to come with me to look at this GTI?

I live right outside Parkesburg, I could help you out if work doesn't interfere.

Get a good idea of what an O2O sells for in your area before you make an offer.
Disregard my new username and low post count, I've been here for a long time I just can't get onto my old account...

Are those fender flares pop-riveted to the fenders!?!?!

Kinda tough to tell without reading a VIN. Exterior says "no" but there aren't any side mouldings which were GTi specific. The flares could be stock - they had a bad habit of falling off when the fender lips were rolled. The attachment is rather novel - I'm not sure if the owner was going for the rally look, the grunge look (to compliment the hood and grille which aren't correct) or simply a "I'm a penniless VW Mk2 owner but I want to look cool just like all my friends".

Basically looks like a golf someone dropped a 16v into (since there is no side molding like mgyip said) and horribly riveted flares. Get the vin; will answer all tho's related questions above and more.

Bad news, The car sold and I was supposed to go look at it tomorrow haha. Third time this has happened since I've started looking for a VW. Maybe I'm too picky or something but its being quite the challenge getting one I'm happy with. But, Thanks for all the help guys, Next time I have any question this is gonna be the place I come.

False alarm! It wasn't sold, They said they weren't sure if they wanted to sell or not so they removed the craigslist add. But now that you guys have said that it isn't a GTI I'm starting to notice that it isn't lol . It doesn't have recaros or the badges (from what I can tell from the pictures). Oh and I also noticed on the add right before they removed it they changed the price to 1600, So the question is... If this car is actually in decent shape other than the transmission and the down pipe, should I consider buying it?

I don't even have to see pictures and I'm interested, but I'm afraid it might be out of my price range and driving range

Recaros weren't an option for gti's until 90-92 so the car shouldn't have them. It looks like someone might have just stripped the exterior of side moldings and badges, but as others have said get the vin. That's the only way to know what exactly it is.
