Thread: Passat VR6 Wont start, it has fuel and spark but wont start.

  1. 08-09-2012 03:03 PM #1
I bought the car, the previous owner didnt know what was wrong with it. He bought the car like this, also the previous owner. So I found the owner who had it when the car broke down.

He was driving and the car choked and it wouldnt start, so he sold it as he didnt know anything about cars.

Now I've been looking at it, It has fuel and spark but wont start, there's also some knocking noise when i try to start it.

Do you guys have any idea what could be the cause of why the car wont start, as it has fuel and spark?

I'd bet the timing chain slipped badly or something like that. Can you pull the engine codes?

Generally if the cams just jump time a few teeth, the engine will run, but have a really bad missfire and tapping/clanking. It would have to jump A LOT for it not to even run...Or break one of the chains.

Pull the oil cap and look inside at the camshaft while cranking. See if the cams are even turning.

If you want you can do a cylinder leak down test or a compression test to see if the engine is worth saving. If its mechanical in the engine, it will be at least a grand or so to do any repairs. So if you can get a good VR6 for less than that, go for it.

BTW: what year is this thing? Does it have a coilpack ignition or distributor? Make SURE the firing order of the spark plug wires are correct. If its a distributor, make sure the distributor is turning.

If the said vehicle has an automatic transmission, cut your losses now and get rid of the whole headache.
