Waited 12 years to drive this, severely disappointed. I would buy a clean GTA without delay though.

Felt like I was driving a late 80's 750i with a cool exhaust and updated interior that had me at hello. Too front heavy and just not a fun car to drive.

Ugly as **** in my opinion but caught me by surprise when I test drove it. I ended up driving it for 2 solid hours.

Ill have to totally disagree with you on both the vw and the Maserati. Just because your not good at wrenching on them dose not make it a bad car, it was epic. The Maserati has a fantastic engine trans if you get the 06 and later. Maybe the car you drove was not maintained properly because they drive super nice.

A lot of cars in this thread have proven their worth. Just because you don't like the way they drive...doesnt mean they arnt great cars. Just not your cup of tea.
The 2.5RS was no WRX - the looks definitely oversold it - but it was the lightest car Subaru ever chucked the EJ25 into. 165hp/162ft-lb in a 2800lb car was quick for its era in the US. Hyundai has never made an Accent as quick from a standing start as a 5-speed 2.5RS, not even the current 138hp model.
They also handle extremely well, before people figured out how to prep the '89 Civics these were the car to have for STS since they could max out the class rules for tire width easily. Especially the '00-'01 with rear LSD.

never driven a countach, but sat in one last week....
HORRIBLE visability. I dont know how you could drive one on a freeway and merge...there really isnt any rear window, and HUGE blind spots on the sides. The pedals are hard to get to and the driver is really cramped.
I too had a poster of a white one, and when I say the car last week, I instantly though, OMFG, awesome!!
I was warned by my buddy that it really isnt all that and the driving experience is horrible.....
Though the clutch does suck, it's no worse than a lot of high performance cars of the era (like any big block Ford car with a manual trans)
I love cars, but the problem is they are like schroedinger's hobby. They're always in a quantum superstate of being both awesome and a huge waste of time and money... until observation momentarily forces them into one state or another.
The 507 is an absolutely beautiful car, but they were ridiculously expensive, they overheated easily and supposedly weren't that reliable. Naturally, it's safe to assume I've never owned one, so you can take that with as big of a grain of salt as you desire.

definitely agree with the Lamborghini Countach as well as the GM F-bodies, particularly the later ones. i'll also throw out the Mitsubishi 3000 GT, which looked better than most of the Japanese sports cars and GTs of the same period, but had the worst overall performance.
Pssst, according to Harry Metcalfe and the people at Octane/Classic and Sports Car, the Countach was actually pretty darn good, even from the persepctive of a modern reviewer.
James May is a journalist, and was one in print long before Top Gear, but let's not forget that they're WAY funnier when they're being derisive(and they are in fact, making an entertainment centered program, not a factual one).

How is liking one of the best FWD cars ever, past or present, living in the past? Don't we all wax poetic about the cars of yore? Do you apply the same sentiment of the ITR to the E30 M3? The E30 M3 had an equally successful racing history, but that is....history. It is in the past. The E30 M3's performance numbers are trumped by modern minivans, and all that's left is that "sublime gear box" and the "feel" so often associated with virtually all performance cars from the 90s.
Your logic for knocking C4 A6's love for the ITR is flawed, as it can be applied to ANY performance car of the past.
