Thread: HELP... DSG shift knob swap questions..

  1. 08-10-2012 01:57 PM #1
i know this has been covered a BUNCH. i have read 25 pages worth here and on AZ. i have the knob off, and am deciding on the heat and twist or the grub method. have the stuff to do either. my question is regarding the actual install....

on the stock knob there is a silver clip and also a secondary plastic piece below the knob that is held on with the clip. do i reuse that, and the silver clip? or does this s-tronic knob just slide and click in place? what about the collar below the s-tronic knob, i know it rotates about 20 degrees, am i supposed to rotate that to lock the knob in place? i am very aware of the "don't push the button" thing, i have secured it out with a tiny zip tie till i am ready to push the knob. thanks in advance for the info, i could not find a single pic or bit of info about this....it all seems to be focused on getting the slot turned 90 degrees.

i didn't reuse anything from the old knob. removed it and put it aside.

    cut and grub method.

slide on new knob (make sure you push it far down enough)..then disengage button. i released my button a bit too high and had to fish the button back out w/ a coat hanger.

Don't reuse the clamp from the stock knob. The new knob has a plastic collar that you turn to lock it on after you push it down onto the shifter shaft. Push knob down, turn collar to lock it in place, check to make sure knob is secure, then push the button to release the lever inside.

sweet, can you unlock the collar once locked if you need to take it back for adjustment or due to a problem?

take the silver btch of a clip off. disgard it.
the new knob shouldve come with a plastic piece that replaces the silver clamp/clip with the new knob - it's black, and has like pointy legs? haha
