    Its really a simple formula..

    VR6 : Intake + exhaust = Chewbacca!

if you really want it to sound like a wookie take 1 spark plug wire loose. I had to do this a few weeks ago(temporary) and it sounded just like one.

I have had a header and full exhaust but after I put on a 42 draft intake pipe and AFE pro intake and it seems to sound more like one than it did before the intake.

the unique sound of the VR6 comes from the unique layout of the engine, especially the unequal length intake and exhaust runners.

all i have is a cone filter and cut the resonator out and put new muffler on (ansa sport) i can slightly hear the chewy sound at slow first gear rpms sometimes, but i heard a mk4 vr the other day and i could hear it way better and longer, so it just made me wonder

I hear it from 3-5k rpms. Maybe you should rev it out a lil more.

Honestly, easiest way to achieve chewy status:

    1. Remove suitcase muffler
    2. Modify airbox or cone filter (Make a heatshield)
    3. New muffler (borla or magnaflow seem to be the preferred)
    4. Highflow cat or testpipe
    5. Larger exhaust piping. (2.5 to 3")

The further on that list you go the louder chewbacca will yell. It'll also get you more unwanted attention (police). At minimum all you really need to hear the sound is to remove the suitcase and modify the airbox. The engine itself is already set up for this unique sound. What all did the mk4 have done to it?

All I have done to mine is removed the suitcase muffler and installed a cone filter that reaches down to right under the headlight. Added a heatshield and I can hear the growling tone all the way through my rpm range. Ive watched people almost fall off there bike from turning their head to see where the sound came from.

Im even still using the original muffler. Maybe your muffler is taking away from the sound your looking to achieve. Different mufflers will cause different sounds.

Funny I put a new TT cat on mine it went from baby chewy to teenage chewy ....hmm....suit case needs to go next
Already have a magnaflow muffler and 2.5 inch pipe so . If you keep the revs around 3k and hammer it from 2nd to 4th u will hear chewy for certain

Honestly, the suitcase and the intake are what keep it quiet the most. I had no suitcase and modified my airbox and it did get quite a bit louder. Then I chose to run a pipe with a cone filter and heatshield and it got even louder.

Mine has no resonator at all. Its torture for me to even listen to. My motors out of the car in pieces right now. And cars getting a color change second week of november so probably wont be driving it again until the end of november. Hoping we don't have a rough winter, cause once its done im gonna wanna drive it but not doing so with salt on the ground.

someone once told me that the 2.9L manifold helps with the"chewbacca" sound and makes it more vibrant. anybody have experience with this?

I dont have any experience with it yet, but I would have to assume so. I do want to make a clone manifold eventually. And hopefully cams chip and mk4 headgasket.

The real key to your question would be has anyone changed just the manifold without doing other work at the same time. Some of the other work may also be adding to the sound.
