Thread: Anybody know how to put on the rocker panels?

  1. 08-10-2012 03:14 PM #1
My driver side rocker panel got destroyed so I had it repainted. Unfortunately I can NOT get this damn thing on to save my life.

I put the clips in just fine, and the black...holders? But from there I can not get the actual panel on. Has anyone had to do this before?

Better question, anyone know of a good shop in south florida that can put it on at a reasonable price?

You're supposed to install the skirt as a whole assembly, not put it in piece by piece. You're supposed to put the white clips in the holders then put the black holders in the skirt panel. After that you mount the whole thing to the car back to front, pushing in the clips as you go. Unfortunately now that you've put the actual clips in, there is no way to get them out in one piece.

Well, I guess I'll order more and give it another try. Is there any easier way to get these damn clips out though? I broke 2 screwdrivers getting the 12 out.

The trick is to separate the outer shell from the inner piece, they are attached via tabs at the top of the skirt which can be exposed and undone once all the screws/bolts are out. Once the outer piece is off, the inner piece comes out easily, though the white fasteners that mount the skirt into the frame are somewhat permanent. There is no good way to get the tip out (imagine getting shot with an arrow). I basically just used a hammer and flathead screwdriver to sever the fastener at the frame, leaving the tip in and removing the rest. As long as you position the flathead between the rubber insert and the fastener (don't touch the frame) you'll be fine.
I'll just quote myself since it's easier than retyping it. It goes quick once you figure out what to do.

Break old clips (cut them in half essentially)
    Remove old rocker panel
Push in remaining old part of clip into body, unfortunately
Remove any old rubber grommet remaining
    Clean up body
Insert new rubber grommets into holes
Put new clips onto new rocker panel
Snap rocker panel clips into the body holes
Attach screws on the ends and the screws/clips underneath
    DONE!

He might be able to reuse the plastic clips if he is very careful removing them.

I honestly don't know how you can pull them out and expect to reuse them, once they go in....the fingers spread open and it's in (one way street kind of deal).
When you pull on the clip, it doesn't really budge anyways.
And if you do keep pulling, then you run the risk of damaging the side skirt's "frame"/inner shell and you're really screwed

And the trouble to do it all carefully, even IF you can save them, really isn't worth it since the clips are so cheap

That's my take on it anyways
