Thread: Torque converter for an '82 ,1.6 L Diesel

  1. 08-10-2012 06:39 PM #1
I have an '82 ,1.6 L diesel out of a Rabbit pickup that I want to put in a GEO Tracker. The Tracker has a Geo A/T and its torque converter is not compatible with the power output of a diesel. Is there a VW diesel with an A/T that I can use ,either as a whole unit or just its torque converter ? If there is I will try and adapt that or, if not, I will have to replace the A/T with a GEO 5 speed M/T, which I know will work. Thank you, Ken

There were auto mk1 diesels. Not sure about mk2's.

Keep in mind too, even if you go with a 5-speed, you need the correct gearing to make it work well with a diesel. Yes, a gasser manual will work, but the gearing will be off and you'll be in high RPMs at highway speeds more than likely.

Year ranges. There are forums for each below. Mk1 is through '84. Mk2 is '85-'92 I think.
