So I just got my bottom end and head back from the machine shop. When the machine shop milled and cleaned the head they have seemed to "misplace" aka lose an alignment dowel. Essentially there are two of these hollowed out alignment dowels which rest on top of the lower block. It aligns the headgasket and head and prevents shifting when you are torquing down the headbolts. Does anyone have a part number for these dowels? I have done some researching and people said to use an old headbolt, cut it in half and put a slit in an end. That way you can at least align the head and then yank it out when 19/20 bolts are in and then put the new bolt in it's place. It makes sense, but I rather try and see if I can get the replacement dowel. Thanks

I think all of the parts stores carry "universal" cylinder head dowel pins. Felpro makes a bunch of them. You just have to find the right diameter.

Just using part of a head bolt as an alignment dowel might not be sufficient. I notice that when I set the head on one of my spare VR blocks without dowel pins and start all of the bolts, the head will still scoot and slide around a fair bit. With dowel pins, its locked solid and won't slide around at all.

Problem solved in case anyone reads this in the future...
    The alignment dowel VW Part# is: N 905 026 01.
Luckily the VW stealership had them in stock for ~$2.00 a piece.

    Part #21 in the diagram.

Really didn't feel like haven't the headgasket/head mis-aligned and haven't to rip about the block again. Thanks SilentDawn
