I have been doing a lot of up keep and maintenance to my 91 80q over the last few months so I can keep the car a daily as its getting up there in mileage. The last time I changed the oil I used 10w-40 in it. I was wondering if you guys run a thicker oil in your higher mileage(200k+) 10v's. I have quite a bit of lifter tick with the engine warm and was wondering if this would help the motor out any. I already know its burning oil also. Not a huge amount but it still loses a little.

Next question is what the best tranny fluid to replace the stock is? Its something this car has been needing for a while so id love to get it done. Also the fill plug is on the ds of the transmission about halfway way up correct? I already have the 17mm tool for it so no worrys there.

    Thanks guys for any help

For the engine oil, I run total 5w40. It is a synthetic oil, that still has zinc in it. When I first picked up my 80q the ng had some lifter tap, after changing over to this oil, and running it through 1 oil change, the lifter tap was almost gone.

As for the trans oil, I have been told to run either motol, or redline, 75w90 gear oil. But make sure its the correct GL rating. I think its supposed to be GL4(safe for brass and bronze). You might want to double check that though.

Ill probably pickup a jug of the total 5w40 and give that a try. Thanks for the suggestion. Hopefully it will quiet the engine down a bit.

Also any idea on how much tranny fluid is needed for a full flush and refill?

One more question. I've had a can of seafoam lying around for a while now. Would you guys suggest using it on my 10v or should I just leave it as is?

I wouldnt recomend using oil additives at all. In my experience, they do more harm than good. As for how much gear oil for the trans, Im still trying to figure that one out myself

As soon as I find out, I will let you know.

My 1995 V6 20v uses 3.125 Liters, if that helps.
I use Red Line MT-90 oil for the tranny.

I wasn't planning on adding it to my oil, but through the vacuum hose. I wouldn't try it in my oil ever.

Thanks for the info about the tranny fluid though. Looks like I will try to get 4 quarts and go from there.
