Did you center the disk? How did the fw surface look?
#1
Hey all,
trying to diagnose why my car is shaking after I installed a new clutch. As far as I can tell, it only does this in first gear on take off when the clutch disengages. I replaced the clutch, flywheel, pressure plate and throw out bearing with new bolts. The parts weren't brand new (except the bolts). They were in a mkiv when it was bought and taken when the car was modified, so they have been sitting around for some time. The previous owner said they had about 50 miles of wear.
Any ideas on this? It's starting to worry me and I don't want to do any damage to anything else as it's a pretty heavy shake
Thanks![]()

everything looked pretty clean. It was a friend who did the install, I assume it was centred. Can't it only go on in a certain way?

Yes only one way. You installed a used throw out bearing? They're only about 30 dollars and can be part of your issue. Ride it out for a while see what happens before ripping back into it.

it was as used as the clutch, only about 50 miles of use. Will riding it out do any other damage? If it feels like it's slipping in first, then that's bad right?

Someone might've sold you a soaked disc....or got soaked with oil during install. This will ruin a brand new disc and cause it to slip.
If the car is shaking, the disc wasn't centered and/or improperly tq'd flywheel. I would take it back to whoever installed it ASAP.

First has a lot of torque so it'll be most noticeable. Not to much can be wrong. He listed off pretty much all the possible issues.
Ride it for a bit but I feel you'll be taking it back out

so am I looking at needing a whole new clutch again if those are the issues?

Once a disc soaks up oil its kinda messed.
One thing that may cause a shake like that could be a worn or loose engine/trans mount. Im gonna assuming at least one was removed to remove the trans........ its quite possible a bolt didnt get tightened.

2000 to do a clutch...... thats a little much. If the issue is the shops fault I wouldnt give them a cent more. Maybe a brick or two through the window.

I went into a mechanic to ask them how much they would charge to diagnose this and they said that it sounds more like the drive shaft is loose. Could this be possible, too?
I got a quote for a clutch repair earlier and it was $1140

It's quite possible. Everything that was removed when the clutch was replace is suspect. Drive shafts are one of them. Fortunetely they are easy to tighten/check vs removing. Rule out easy stuff first!

ok, so easy stuff being drive shaft, transmission mounts, engine mounts. Anything else?
Once the easy stuff is checked, if there is still a problem and it turns out to be clutch related, how will I know what part of the clutch it is (i.e. flywheel, pressure plate, clutch plate)?
Thanks
