I've been lookin around at 04-05 goats for around 17 or less (meaning a little higher mileage) Should there be anything that I'd have to lookout for since the ones i've been looking at start from 50k and up ? I know the 6.0 is better, but I believe the 5.7 would satisfy what I'm looking for specially coming from a gti.

$17k??!! You should be able to get an early GTO for MUCH less than that.

Pull the trigger on the 04. I had a torrid red 04 gto and am in the process of getting another one. Most of the goats had color matching themes. ( red car = red interior and gauge cluster ) Mine had the black interior. They're fast, roomy, great build quality, awesome interior and reliable

I actually switched cars with my buddy today, hes got an 04 but auto and I gotta say I'm very impressed. Overall the car felt so much more solid than my gti, not to mention the interior is pretty nice for 04. Its got just an intake and exhaust, but it hauls and really didn't get too bad of mileage either. I'm definetely going to check some out within the next few weeks. I think I'm set on getting one whether its now or in a little time!

I'd love one, my only complaint is the trunk.

No issues with mine. I admit i keep looking with some regret when a C6 drives by, but the gto is far the better daily driver. Only issue i ever really had was the gas cap issue, which is a 7 buck fix.

An 04 would cheaper to modify if thats your thing, the LS1 has a very big pool of parts to chose from. Keep an eye out for strut rub on the 04. Gas pedal issues on the early '05.

Cruse by www.ls1gto.com forums , info, rants, and stories galore.

Since its the in thing, i'll say the city mileage sucks, but thats what the Camry is for.

great cars. big and heavy, so they go through a fair amount of brakes/tires if you're going to be driving hard.
    Regarding DD'ing a tuned Evo:

Go for an LS2 if you can, they are quicker and the cars are a bit nicer. An example is the quicker power seat motors in 06 than 04&05. They're all great cars but generally the later the model the better
My dad has an 05 that's black with a red gut and the car is great. Fun to drive, super reliable, great mileage for what it is and fast.

Relevant thread is kind of relevant? http://forums.vwvortex.com/showthread.php?5739832-C4-ZR1-vs.-6.0-GTO-vs.-C5-Z06

It boils down to get the GTO if you need the room/comfort, get the Z06 if you want a sports car, get the ZR1 if you want a weekend baby

Well, so far all I've been seeing is good things about these cars so that definetely makes me want one more. And as for the Vettes, as much as I'd love one, they're a little out of my price range.

My dad bought an 04 new, also the car that I learned how to drive in
Fantastic car, I miss it to this day and would've picked one up when I was car shopping but sadly they were out of my price range. One thing I remember is brakes go quick, and there was an issue on 04s with a suspension part rubbing on the tire causing premature wear.
These things turn something like 1200 rpm in 6th at 70mph, I thing my dad got 28 or 29 on the highway if he kept his foot out of it. Skip shift is annoying, but can be easily deleted. Thats all i can think of right now, good luck in your search
