18+ OEM or GTFO
#1
Hey everyone, just purchased a black 2012 tdi last week. Not really liking the small 16 inch alloys that came with the car. I ám leaning towards 17 inch wheels for summer. .Going to run the 16's in winter. I have been liking the 17 inch joda and goals (anthracite). Having a hard time trying to decide as there are many oem and aftermarket wheels out there. If anyone has pics or opinions, it would greatly apprecaited.
Thanks

Im in same boat as you, I actually just put my stock 16's back on about 2 hours ago. I had 18 inch Black VW Karthoums on there. Our stock mambo wheels weigh 22 pounds alone each. The Karthoums weigh 28 pounds each! And that's without tires. The way I see it, lighter wheels = better mpg. I'm looking into 17 inch TSW Nurburgrings. They are 17x8 inches are 17.95 pounds each. and the 18x8 are 18.6 pounds. Oh and they are rotary forged so they are very strong. I see a win win!

Very true, I never realized the weight difference, now I have to change them!

The wheels I am getting weigh slightly over 24lbs, and they are 19x8 OEMs.
Guess...

Nope

It is worth noting that rotational inertia is what matters here. A 18" rim that weighs 20lbs will do worse than a 16" rim that weighs 18lbs. A 19" rim will give you worse mpg pretty much regardless of weight because of how far from center that weight is.
Now go get the nice rims and quit telling yourself you care about mpg.![]()

Which is better to use for 18x8 TSW Snetterton rims on a tdi, Coils or H&R Springs?
Which ones do you guys prefer?

Here's my car on anthracite Goals and H&R springs.

Anyone know the weight difference between 17" Joda wheels standard on the 2013 TDi and the 18" Bathurst? Looking to switch, but all this MPG talk is making me reconsider.![]()

Joda 23-25

Bathurst is probably the same as the Charlestons so about 28-29

Jetta TDI: $23,000
Full tank of diesel: $55
Forgetting the last time you fill up?... PRICELESS
The best thing money can buy. Clean diesel TDi

OEM wheels weigh so damn much, but nothing looks better than a clean OEM+ car.

How light of a wheel are you looking for?
#27
You probably should've gotten a Volt if you are that concerned with MPGs.

What did I shoot down? Seriously, if you want that light of wheels, purely for MPGs on an already fuel sipping car, you should've gotten a Hybrid. I want light wheels too, but for different reasons. The amount that you will spend on a strong but light wheel will not even come close to the few MPGs you'd lose over 4 or 5 years.
Welcome to reality.

No, the reality is that you know nothing about economy apparently. So what if it would take a few years to save anything. Most diesel owners keep their cars over 5 years anyway. And i want it for looks, not just economy because stock 16 inch wheels dont proportionately work well with the mkvi body.

Did you mean economics, or the economy...
To each his own I guess. Good luck in your money saving ventures.
