We discussed this in OT, German toilets have poop shelves. Obviously your dog takes this very seriously and is just abiding by his heritage..
My German Sheperd has some strange behavior when he goes no.2, he will either back up way up into a bush, or bushy area, or straddling a rock, or something and he only does this for No.2.
This is something he's started doing on his own, and it makes it almost impossible to step in it.
I think it stems from him being punished and mistreated while going no.2 as a puppy.
...And yes, I cleaned up after my dog.

Well, depending on the circumstances of being punished for something a dog believes is perfectly natural will confuse them.
You say he just started doing this on his own; does this imply you've had the dog before this behavior started occurring?

My guess is the former owner would scold your dog for going 2 in the grass (or large areas of similar flooring i.e. carpet). So he thinks that hiding it will not get him scolded since it's not on the grass or carpet.
Is this a problem he's doing this, or just an inquiry as to why?
It's more of a query as to if this is common with German Shepherds.
I'm thinking the craigslist crack heads, that I bought the dog from, obviously punished the dog for going no.2...
Unless, this is a German Sheperd thing...
He also prefers privacy, while he's going...
Thanks for all the replies!

I have nothing to contribute to the thread, however my OCD demands I point out that there is no such thing as a German Shepard or Shephard. They are only German SHEPHERDS.
Hehehe, I had a feeling...
Is your sheperd sensitive about having his paws handled, or have a problem with having his nails cut?
Hund's nails are getting worn down to a perfect length, just from being an active dog, and ~2 mile daily walk.
I have an acquaintance, that has a german sheperd about the same age, and his nails are too long. This sheperd is also funny about having his paws handled... The nails are too long, because they hardly walk him, and they're afraid to trim his nails.
Thanks for the correction Rockhead, I'm really anal about my spelling, so I really appreciate it!
That's too funny. I have a dog that I think, does what most humans do, and checks out his poo. Most dogs go out, squat, and it's done. Not him. He's constantly walking around in circles trying to look at it while its coming out. It takes him forever.
I had a wolf hybrid, Bear, that did something similar...
He'd stand on hid bad* hind leg, with his good leg sticking out between the 2 front legs when he was a pup, he got hit by a car, and he had to get his thigh popped back into it's socket.)
It made it close to impossible not to step in poop, with his poop parade.
* Bear got hit by a car as a puppy, and had to get his leg popped back into socket.
I have no idea why he would favour the leg, that popped out...
