I have a Droid Razr; in an OEM car dock mount.
It's mounted in the lower driver's side corner of the window and wired directly into the fuse panel to avoid cable runs across the dash.

If you are using a mount for your smartphone, what are you using and where do you have it mounted?
Thanks!

I just got the OEM mount for my GSII and tried mounting it in the same place and the biggest issue I had was that the sun was baking the phone sitting in the windscreen and then the phone felt like a hot coal in my pocket for a long time afterwards.
I am thinking of trying this Mountek CD slot mount:

Aah, gotcha.
My car is garaged at home and at work, so the only time it gets any sun is my actual drive time.![]()

^ That looks great. From the pic (both from the phone charging and the little stub at the bottom) it seem like its got a dock connector at the bottom. Is that right? Could you post some more pics and give a little more info?

that looks really good marblefrom the looks of it, it's taken over the cup holders in the center console correct?

I use a RAM suction mount, but if you weren't shy about putting holes somewhere in your interior, you could accomplish a lot with a single 1" RAM ball mount.

Just a note about the tightening screw. I got the Mountek for my son's Jetta. I replaced the big wingnut-like screw with an M6 16mm standard pitch Black Socket Head Cap Screw like the one pictured below. The 16mm was just long enough to tighten it with minimum left sticking out. And the cap end on the screw with the rough edges provides enough grip to hand tighten the Mountek in the slot. You can also use an allen key to tighten the screw just a little more. The screw is perfect and blocks the screen less, almost not at all.
The Mountek is a great mount. It is the perfect location for the phone. The mount isn't rigid, but it is secure enough to use the phone. Evidence that the mount is OK, my teenage son didn't break it even after about 6-months of use.
Bye the way, I just took the wing-screw into the hardware store to try different nuts to figure out the size. Then I got different length screws and found the 16mm was just the right thing.

You can see how small the M6 screw is in the photo of my son's car with an iPod in the holder.

Will the Mountek hold a tablet? Maybe a Nexus 7 or even an iPad?
#15
Thank you! Yes, the iPhone/ iPod cable that comes with the AppRadio is routed to that location and provides connectivity between my iPhone and head unit. Unfortunately I do not have any other pics, the pic I provided is version 2.0.
Thank you! And correct, I wanted to design and build it as another subtle addition to the audio gear I have also installed, including a rear center mounted amp and custom rear deck enclosure that I built as well.
Before I made the commitment to it, I made sure to only use the GIANT cup holders in the doors, and after a week or two I knew that the center cup holders were just redundant.
No details, other than it being a custom install I did for that "little extra." I have wanted to build additional smartphone docking solutions, but haven't received any inquiries. I will be creating a new idea for my MKVI GLI as well.

No, Mountek mount is too small and the weight would likely be too much for a the CD slot.
If I wanted to mount a tablet, I think I would try the Arkon seat bolt mount.

I just got a proclip to mount an iphone4 and I'm really liking it. It doesn't obstruct the stereo or vents, and it seems very solid.

I've always wondered about the Mountek putting added stress on the CD player and gradually damaging it. What are your feelings on this? Is the CD opening sturdy enough?

I got one of these it works OK but not great. A little flimsy and blocks the vent, for the money it is a good buy if you just use it once in a while. I don't like that I need to use both hands to operate it. and the bottom doesn't secure well it just sits there. But it was $10..00 So if you just us it on long trips and don't want to spend much it's OK

I have a ProClip also for my iPhone 4. It's a pretty robust mount. It's easy to swivel for portrait or landscape and I have a iPhone extension cable to get from the MDI to the iPhone. ProClip is pricey IMO, but good quality.
#26
The ProClip does look ideal and I've read it is very sturdy. Is it difficult at all to get it in place slipped under the dash trim? I admit I was concerned about getting it installed. For the ProClip, can you provide the exact details about the part number(s) for what you ordered, the vendor, and the price? I might try that for my son too.
Since I read so many good reviews about the Mountek and is was so inexpensive, I gave it a try. It seems quite good and my son likes it fine, but I think the ProClip looks like it might be more solid and it is still in a great position to use the phone. I'd be willing to try it, if I was sure I wouldn't break the dash trim getting it installed.
PS: For the Mountek, I think I should add that it does not block the vents at all. It is far enough away from the dash that that is a non issue.

Here's exactly what I have:

The install was very easy. Slightly more complicated than it was on my 2008 GTI, but still took maybe 2 minutes for the mount, then another couple for the phone holder. Did no damage to any part of the car and I would definitely recommend it.

Awesome, thanks!

Thank you for the links to the exact part numbers!
When I looked at the installation notes for the mount, it mentioned adhesive tape. They note that it doesn’t hurt the dash, but I wonder about how easy it would be to damage the soft-touch dash material on our cars. Do you really need to use the tape to keep the mount from sliding down? On yours, it looks like maybe the mount is located down where contact with the tuning knob might stop the mount from shifting.
