Thread: No Kill Shelter or Free to Good Home?

  1. 08-13-2012 07:37 PM #1
I have a full blooded Aussie that I have been taking care of for the past couple months, but I can't keep him much longer. I have contacted Aussie rescues, but none of them have the room or funds to take him. So my question is, assuming that I can find a no kill shelter with space, should I give him up or put out a free to good home ad and hope I can find him a responsible owner? Or if anyone else has another idea?

Looking for any advice I can get.

Yeah, that'll totally work. Best way for your dog to end up as a bait dog is put him on CL as a freebie.

You assumed the responsibility of taking care of the dog... the least you can do is keep researching rescues or find a no-kill shelter to take him to.

If you bring him to a no-kill shelter, drop him off with a hundred bucks or so as well --- the least you can do is toss in a small donation

Another resource are the dog sports clubs in your area since its an Aussie (flyball, agility, scent work, etc).

I volunteer at a dog rescue and I'm here to tell you that CL can be a horrible ending for a dog. It may sound tempting because you think he's going to a good home and such but you do not know if that family or person will keep him.

Contact a no kill rescue, even if you have to call a few, explain your situation and beg for their help. You owe it to the dog.

Yea I have, no one has resources so they won't take him unless he was already on death row in a shelter. I understand that funding is tight, but where is the logic in that?

I decided to keep him around until something dependable and trustworthy happens. I feel bad though as he spends most of his days in 10x10 kennel. Better than some of the alternatives I suppose.

By the way to whoever it was insinuating that I am just trying to dump the dog off your wrong. I agreed to take care of him for a month while a family member was having health issues. It has now been over a year.
