Lower timing cover yes as it houses the rear main seal but the oil pan wont. No need for special tools either just a block off wood did it for me.

Does the lower timing chain cover and oil pan have to come off? Do I have to have special tools from kit 2003 like the Bentley says?
Thanks

I've got a teflon seal that came with a plastic installation tool... how exactly do I use this to install it? Do I press it onto the crank itself and fit the lower timing cover over it, or do I install it into the cover and fit it over the crank? Either way it seems I have to be super careful the timing cover is positioned correctly over the crank. Are there dowels I need to buy to guide the lower cover on perfectly? And there's no way to remove/install the seal without taking the cover off, even with special tools? Sorry for all the questions... noob here.

Take cover off, Take old one off with screwdriver (as per other thread) and press or using a bit of wood install back into the cover (make sure you pay attention to which way the seal was installed into the old cover and make sure its the same for the new one. Then just be careful when you put the cover back over the crank and make sure the seal isn't folded. Shouldn't need anything special to do it didn't seem that hard to do it decently as long as you take your time with it. Don't see it being very easy to do without taking the cover off specially as its not that hard to take the cover off and put it back on. Cover comes off with just a few bolts
