    mk3 jetta gas mileage question

    looking for a car to get me more than my trucks getting me at 15mpg....and for a winter beater, locally theres a 97 jetta 5 spd, 150,000 kms (94,000 miles) for $1100, its in decent shape looks to need a bit of body work but thats no biggy...
    i was just wondering what you guys have gotten in terms of mileage out of one of these cars, is 40mpg too far fetched??

    also, its not the best looking car in the world (its ugly) is it possible to make these cars actually look decent?

    Might also be important to say what engine is in it. 40mpg...don't think you'll get that unless its a TDI.
