    Hey all,

I have a metal like banging noise coming from the front end of my 2010 Jetta. At first I thought it was the steering rack, replaced that but the noise is still there. I need someone that knows his stuff to take a quick listen and tell me what it is.
I also need VagCom help to reset my steering angle sensor.

    Thanks in advance!

    P.S.
I am not trying to diagnose the problem online, I am looking for a VW tech who can check it out in his free time. I'll pay or bring beers, whatever works, I don't expect free work.

Shouldn't it be under guarantee still if it's a 2010 Jetta?

Bought from a friend of mine with the salvage title already, so no warranty. I was aware of the noise and I swore 100% that it was the steering rack....well, it wasn't. It's coming from the left side front, just can't seem to figure out what it is And it only does it in certain steering positions, when going from center steering to the right and then back...it never does it going from center to left. Also I can duplicate the same noise when going over a speed bump, when the suspension moves around

Instead of throwing expensive parts at the car, why not pay a reputable shop to at least diagnose it? It's hard to diagnose those sorts of problems online, without hearing it.

My guess is that it is a engine or transmission mount.

I really wish everyone would update their location in their profile!

    Someone buy my car already!!

I am wondering how bad this was wrecked to have a salvage title after only a couple of years. Must have had a bit of damage to exceed the value of the car. If it was wrecked and repaired in the front the noise could have something to do with this. I had a non-VW FWD car that was repaired after a minor event that ended up having a strut mount tower oil-canning when cornering. Maybe what you hear is some part of the body popping in and out. It can be quite loud, as the entire body becomes a speaker.

I went to my friend's shop who suggested it was the steering rack since the sounds were coming from around the subframe area...he checked the suspension and told me it was good to go. I also did research before buying the rack, seems to fail pretty often so I bought it...turns out it is not the culprit...live and learn, what can I say.

I'm just sick of halfarsed shops trying to diagnose my car.

I also put in the Eibachs when I had the steering rack changed but that is not the problem.

Here is a pic of it when it was damaged, it was not hit directly in the wheel, but the corner of the bumper...still, I think sway bar link could be the problem.

Sway bar end links are very common, and make a lot of noise over bumps and when steering.

If you're looking for a reputable mechanic to take a look at it this is the only guy I trust to work on my cars other than me.

    JRE Automotive

    info@jreauto.com

He used to work at Sunset Audi Porsche and a couple other shops. Great guy, great quality work, fair prices. He runs his own shop out of Sherwood OR.

GL tracking down the noise if you decide to keep tracking it down solo...been there and it can be a pain! LCA bolts are a great thing to check too, got my buddy once before.

Did the strut bearing get replaced? If the original strut bearing did not get replaced and are worn/broken out, a popping/vibrating sound can happen during turns and bumps. Just another thought to check out as well as the sway bar links.
Was the passenger axle replaced? If the simple stuff does not end your issue, have the CVD's checked out on that side, the bearings are not meant to withstand impact damage from an accident. Even if you took the car to a shop, you would have to know exactly what parts have been replaced or not; that way the mechanic would have a good starting point of where to look and listen for.

Hope this helps a little more.

Side note: ("I also need VagCom help to reset my steering angle sensor.") if you have not had this fixed, I may be able to help.
