Also, while I don't agree with the jail time at all, her punishment has nothing to do with religious zealots or Texas- surely a code of conduct that keeps teachers from sleeping with students, just as many places have rules against managers/superiors sleeping with employees. Any time you're dealing with a relationship between an employee/student and someone in a position of power, there's potential for much sketchiness.

Prison time is a bit much. They were all of age. She should definitely lose her job and the ability to teach, but prison time? I think the loss of her career, divorce and public embarrassment is punishment enough.
