Women like this should be applauded for helping to keep the high school dropout rate in this country in check.
Also, while I don't agree with the jail time at all, her punishment has nothing to do with religious zealots or Texas- surely a code of conduct that keeps teachers from sleeping with students, just as many places have rules against managers/superiors sleeping with employees. Any time you're dealing with a relationship between an employee/student and someone in a position of power, there's potential for much sketchiness.
Jesus, just typing that out makes me feel old.
Prison time is a bit much. They were all of age. She should definitely lose her job and the ability to teach, but prison time? I think the loss of her career, divorce and public embarrassment is punishment enough.
It's not like her students are claiming she raped them.
Given how often this stuff is coming to light now, I can only imagine how much teacher-student sex is happening, and has been happening, where everyone keeps the secret.
Lotta' banging going on out there.
And again, I don't condone it because of the potential for power issues and such, but once the student is 18 and it's consensual, I start to not care much about it.
Lord knows I would have had a hard time saying no to any moderately attractive teacher that wanted to have sex once I was in my high school years.
Also notice how much of this is Female teacher/Male Student. And that in almost none of the cases was it non-consensual, and only comes to light becasue someone brags or blabs.
Are male teachers just not doing this? Or our young ladies better able to maintain discretion?
Can you even draw those conclusions?
There's a Doctoral thesis in there for sure.
She was sentenced to 5 years. ****ing Texas is a bit ridiculous Lucky she didn't get the gas chamber, I suppose.
