I decided to dabble with Linux, specifically Lubuntu, on this old laptop that I use for Vag-Com. I have everything loaded (Lubuntu 12.04, Wine1.4 and VCDS 11.11.4) but it doesn't look like the comm port is configured correctly. The port test in Vag-Com fails for Com1-4. I have an older Key-Com licensed dongle (serial) if that matters.
I followed the instructions here for adding the Com ports: http://www.winehq.org/site/docs/wine...s-to-configure
So far I'm coming up empty. I tried to follow a few suggestions in this thread: http://forums.vwvortex.com/showthrea...ing-Wine/page4
Seems like some have luck while others don't. I'm not familiar with VirtualBox, yet. Is running VirtualBox my best bet for a Linux beginner and a 2001 Dell Laptop?
Thanks

I've had good luck with running VCDS in a virtual machine on my Ubuntu-based laptop. I use VirtualBox, but any similar VM manager should work.
