There are two fairly large bolts that are hanging off the back of the block (Threaded in, but flanges are not flush with the block), what is supposed to be bolted there?

What do these wires go to?

They appear to be coming out of the firewall (hard to tell the looming meets the loom right before the firewall, who know where it goes after that). Found floating around underneath the brake MC both are open to ground right now, but that is probably because the PO is half retarded.

And purely for entertainment, here is the previous owners attempt solution for a dome light:

There is only one wire? The headlamp he used is 3V? WTF?

two bolts on the rear of the block are for the exhaust flange stabilizer
they are safe to remove if your stabilzer is missing

this is essentially a thick piece of metal bolted to the block and to the exhaust down pipe to hold the exhaust sturdily in place
there is also a single bolted (on each end) bracket connected to the transmission

as for the wires......i would estimate because they are green and black?
hmmm.....yes well that is a question
there are several sensors on the transmission side of the head

Thanks for the info on the mystery bolts. I believe I have all those sensors connected. There are 4 connections for the two sensors on the heater hose outlet from the head, and another two going to what looks like it might be a low oil pressure switch. Those are the only two sensors I see on the transmission side of the engine and I dont see any lonely terminals.

    ok

well there are several operating systems at play here

first you have a diesel, i have never touched a diesel
second...diesels generally have the same wiring where differences in years on a gasser changed occasionally

do you have power brakes? (vacuum assisted brake booster)
or do you have manual brakes with two switches on the master cylinder for the brake lights?

what kind of speedometer cable do you have?
single piece or a two piece with a BOX?

it appears you have a radiator coolant Overflow tank, does it have any sensors on it?

ok..your vacuum pump, are all the wires on it?

    transmission:
do you have an upshift light on your dash cluster?
upshift lights have a different reverse/upshift connector on the transmission
whereas all others only have a two wire fitting on the transmission for only reverse

    thinking...wires...hmm....
distributor? sorry i dont know if you have a distributor on diesel or not
and unfortnuately i dont own any of the diesel bentley manuals

hmm wonder if it has any wiring for a diesel in my 74-79 book...

Could possibly be for the reverse lights switch on the transmission. It is mounted near where the speedo cable enters the trans. Its black.

I'm don't believe it has an upshift light or a low coolant sensor, but I'm not sure.

It does have power brakes, haven't looked at the speedo cable yet, don't know if reverse lights are working.

The vacuum pump does not have any wiring as far as I know it is entirely mechanical.

I will have to check all these things when I get to the shop tomorrow. Thanks for pointing me in the right direction.

seems highly possible to be the transmission reverse switch

i dont remember the colors of the wires

yeah sure, glad to help give some thoughts to help solve problems
since your NOOB, its also good for you to try to gain insight from people who have taken bits of the cars apart before

My diagram shows grn/blu and blk/gry wires to the back-up switch. grn/blu from the fuse to switch and blk/gry from switch to lights.

The reverse lights work, it does not have a upshift indicator, or low coolant sensor. Also, possibly related, the glow plug light does not come on when the car is started but comes on occasionally while driving.
